No Case vs. Case

I posted some pics of my compy386, and as you can see, i just leave it out in open.. However, it appears that where I posted, I received a lot of anti-caseless sentiment. I never thought it was such a big deal to people, receiving arguments that it's "ugly", or that "the dust will collect and the air you breath is bad", and "i can't wait for a bug to crawl in there", etc.... What do you guys think?

well the way u have all the wires like is kinda ugly, but i think leaving a pc out in the open for a short while is okay, just clean outt he dust whenever you're free. but if you're talking about permanantly then i dont think its a good idea, its very easy to spill something on it or to drop something down from there.

It won't. I live in Singaporr where humidity is at least 80% all the time so I speak this from experience. 🙂

People say the "don't spill it" stuff, too. But I don't get it; how am I supposed to spill something when it's that high? (that shelf is about 5 and a 1/2 foot high from the ground)

then leave it there, its your computer, if you're not going to take out suggestions why are you asking?
i'm just trying to help u buy saying it does belong with a case, if you're worried abuot cooling just make sure u get a well ventilated case

i just wanted to hear people's opinions on case vs case-less 😱

Dude, you just made me a HERO! I can't wait to show that pic to my wife! She freaks out over the fact that I have the side panel off 11 months of the year, with and extra HD hanging out or some other piece of hardware I'm working on.

See my reply to unsped's thread - just a few down (or up, perhaps) the page from yours...
It would also be kind of you to browse the section for a nearby similar thread - he posted first.

What keeps the humidity..? He could always bury it under a pile of slilca gel bags...

To me, personally, I think your results with the non-case option are a work of art as well as having valid scientific advantages of not having a case. It looks alot like a modern version of the breadboards we produced back on our Commercial wheat & cattle operation in the early to mid 1970's that Waz and Cousin Billy used to come out and look at.

The advantages as I see them are being able to keep an eye, and in some cases... no pun(s) intended, an ear on your PC.

If I had that in my house, the wife's cats would have it wrecked in about 15 minutes, so it doesn't work for me in my present situation.

This thread kinda comes down to the whole respect for the other guy thing. Who am I to say that custom water cooling the way I do it is "the" way to go for all people? Who's to say air cooling or anything else is not as valid as the solution I come up with? All I can do is show what I've done and what I've seen and what people reort in general is the result. Deciding what is right for you is NOT my job and I have plenty to do just keeping up with my own decisions.

Woah thats cool. what are you using to protect the back of the MOBO and other things?

Id like to try that sometime.

I don't know what he's using, but a mylar sheet or just a few plastic standoffs would do the trick, with my choice being the second due to promoting cooling of the mommaboard.

yeah, actually, i did read that thread, but see, technically, he is still using a case 😉

what's with the RFI info?

the mobo's on top of 2 cd cases, stacked 2 high, and an anti-static bag with foam inside

visually, there doesn't appear to be a problem with dust

In general, my case allows for easier portability, and it's quieter.

*shrugs*

I wouldn't be against no-case, but i prefer the noise-dampening of a case.

 at that hanging one, definitely don't want that falling over my head

noise, is, of course, an issue. the maxtor hdd is scratching like crazy, but the seagate one is pretty unaudible. will probably replace the maxtor with a samsung spinpoint (i heard those are quiet)

all the fans are attached to a fanbus of some sort, and are on crazy low rpm mode (needless to say, with the computer about 2 ft horizontally away from my head, its very very quiet..)

if i had a case, i'd be all about directing airflow. but right now, having dead air hang above the components doesn't pose too much of a temperature problem...
