No bull or conspiracy theory - just honestly - if we had a 1930's style depression - how bad do you think it would be?

I think the masses will not accept their abject poverty with as much docility as those did back in the '30s. The likelihood of public unrest to point of lawlessness is much greater. I don't know if we'll ever get to the point of Marshall law, but these are the generations that have become accustomed to self gratification. I want it, and I want it now.

1980's Back to the Future II... (the alternate 1980's one where Biff owns everything, not the other one.)

What do you mean IF?
If this were the 1930's they'd be talking about today's depression...

We would not have a 1930's style depression because there are way more resources.

Not going to happen. There are safeguards in place to prevent it. You may think things are bad now, but they are nothing like what it was back then. The day you, your neighbor and your neighbor's neighbor cancels your/their cable TV, internet, and sell your/their computer is the day that we start even THINKING that this is CLOSE to 1930.

The 1930s were precipitated by a lack of action by the Fed and government. They are actively working to prevent it. Whether that causes other problems is unclear.

When the Depression happened last time, there was a semblance of decency and humanity in our country.

If it happens this time, you'll be on your way to loot the Walmart while your neighbors are skinning your family to make clothes out of their hides.

The Economics could happen, but the Social problems won't be as bad. Mainly as a result of extensive Social Programs which were largely inspired by that Depression.

I lol at everyone of these threads. Threads created on expensive computers with expensive monitors. Many times while they are watching HDTV on their expensive cable plan. They go and get a drink of water that they pay for monthly or a soda which is rising in cost weekly. And alcohol is never cheap. To pay it all they drive to their jobs in their Toyota's, Honda, Lexus' etc. All while owning, renting, living in a place where they dont have to worry about if they're going to freeze to death.

When you guys are wondering if you're going to live to see the next morning, complain about depression. But then again you wont be able to, because you'll have long gotten rid of your internet connection :p

Well said. This still remains a virtual depression for most.

This. It's a depression when everyone you know is in real danger of starving to death, NOT when you have to cut back a bit on your beer drinking to make sure buying some piece of gadgetry won't get in the way of your next vacation in Europe.

Our quality of life has improved something like 7 fold in 100 years. Based on this, think about how bad people had it 30 years ago. No matter what, we will have good medicine and food on our tables. Who cares if we go back to 25" TVs. Not end of hte world kind of material.

Speaking of that, if you are worried you better own WMT stock as your only retailer. You'll kiss alot of luxury retailers good bye.

Incorrect. It's a tragedy when everyone is Starving, a Depression is similar to a Recession. That being a Mathematical contraction of the Economy over a specific minimal period of Time. It doesn't really have anything to do with whether People are suffering or how much they may be suffering.
