I have a 94 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 V6 extended cab w/ 172k miles.

I noticed that I don't have any brake lights, not even the one on the cab. I checked the fuse but it was obviously fine since my taillights work.
I didn't even think about it but my dad said to check the BOO (Brake light On/Off switch).
I found it on the brake pedal shaft and I could wiggle it up and down a little bit. Well, doing this made my lights work. What I mean is, if I pull the front of the switch up or down a little bit the lights work until I let of the brake. Pushing down the brake pedal and not touching the switch results in no lights.

My question is, I don't know anything about the operation of the switch. Should I just get another one and stick it in or is there something wrong with the mechanism since the circuit is completed if I move the switch up or down a little? Should there be any play in it?

I would buy a switch first. They are easy to replace and cheap.

Oh and we almost have the same truck.

Sounds like the connections either in the switch or from the switch to the wiring harness are screwy. The first thing I would do is unplug the current switch and check the connectors. You may just be able to clean the connector or ensure that the connector is attached solidly to the wiring.

i'll try to do that, after the temperature gets above the current 0 :D

It doesn't look too tough to remove but its not to easy to work down there
