My rig:

¥ Athlon 64 2800+
¥ Chaintech vnfs3-250
¥ Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4200
¥ Samsung PC2700 512
¥ Zalman CNPS7000B-CU

Before i was using a somewhat generic raidmax 300w psu and all if a sudden it would not boot. This has been almost two months ago now, so the details are a bit fuzzy. I posted on anandtech and ocforums and mostly everyone agreed it was definitely the PSU. Since it was a generic & old thing ( 3.5+ yrs). I purchased an antec smartpower 350w psu and hooked it up and i was anxious to see it turn on finally. no dice. I know i didn't supply much details, but ill root out the things im sure arn't the problem / i've tried:

I've reseated the memory and video card multiple times
CMOS jumper set to 1-2 default
I removed lan card, etc. only running core: mobo, proc, vid, mem.
Surge protector is connected properly, and power is connected properly to the computer.
I've tried two different surge protectors, and two different PSU power cords.
I've tried running it with only the psu power cord plugged in.
All connections are properly inserted.

possible theories:
1. i'm thinking, perhaps, that my case's power button ( soft switch ? ) is malfunctioning. Could this happen? old case and all. If so, how do i start the computer without using the power button? i hear you need to short two wires? can someone tell me how and with what wires.

2. Like i said the details are fuzzy when i first encountered the problem, but i sort of remember hearing a spark or what not when pulling out my psu's power cord one day. Could my mobo be fried? how can i tell?

If anyone could provide any advise or lead me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

By "All connections are properly inserted", do you mean the motherboard standoffs aren't an issue? You could be having a short.

hmm.. so i should take the mobo out of the case and put it on cardboard? what would be the fastest / easiest way to test for a short.

update: i've tried shorting the two cables to start the pc without the soft switch, no dice.

2. i removed the mobo, and put it on a peice of cardboard to see if it was shorting, no dice.

im out of ideas at this point, mobo must be fried? does anyone have any ideas?

If it doesn't start with power cables hooked to only the motherboard and video card, no drives, then I'd try a new motherboard.

^^ what he said. If you have a different video card, even a 1MB Cirrus Logic PCI, then you could slap that in there, but it sort of sounds like either the mobo failed initially, or the PSU failed and took the mobo with it.

</speculation>

well the thing is the mobo is fairly new, 4 months or so. So i don't think it would just fail by itself, unless ofcourse you guys are saying the PSU failed and it took the mobo with it. How would this happen? is this common? or this would only happen because i was careless in tstorm or something?

by "no new mobo" i meant you didnt need a new mobo if it were PCI-e
if it was PCI-e then you just need a PCI-e card, cuz chaintech's stupid like that

Just to check - are you using a different power cable?
Could simply be the fuse has gone in the plug.

@What actually does happen when you turn on/hotwire?
Do you get any fans/leds?
If not, then i would suspect psu, but as you have changed this, (and the power lead!) then it might be the cpu or mobo.
If the cpu is damaged or not plugged in properly, then you might get a second or two where the fans spin and the leds comes on.

to clarify, i get no fans leds beeps post nothing. I'm fairly certaint it's not the CPU, i had a similar problem before and i knew the cpu was the problem - the fans, etc. would spin for a sec or two, then turn off.

"could simply be the fuse has gone in the plug"

what do you mean?

i have tried two different wall sockets, two different surge protectors and two different power cords.

the only thing that i can notice is when i click O on my PSU or pull out the cable, i hear like an electrical sqeak or sound (power letting out?) could this mean anything?

it must be my mobo then, time to go shopping.. what is a good replacement for a vnfs3-250 mobo? Needs to be under $70, but i'm looking for an effective budget solution.

Edit: also interested in used mobos, pm me with name + prices. And mods - yes, i'll check the trade forums.
