No Boot, HD 4870 LED light blinks

  1. Overview of the problem
Computer does not boot, video card LEDs flicks on and off and beeps and power supply fan turns on and off every second.

  2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
In the previous boot, the monitor would not turn on, the cd drive continuously blinked, the wireless keyboard / mouse sensor would not stay on, but the fans were working fine and it seemed like it was booting up just fine except not appearing on the monitor. So I tried to force a reboot but it wouldn't allow me to do that so I had to turn the power supply off and when I turned it back on it would not boot. When I turned the power supply back on, the power and reset lights on the motherboard were lit just fine. However, when I press the power button, 3 of the Video Card LED lights blink on and off while beeping and the PSU fan spins on and off at the same intervals. The computer will not boot and stays in this state until I turn the power supply off. My best guess from what I looked up on the internet is that the LED lights signify power supply issues and that would make sense of all the other problems like the psu fan, monitor not turning on, and the at keyboard/mouse not working properly. However, I am also worried that this may be the video card or the motherboard. This may be unrelated, but a few months back my bios settings randomly reset itself.

  3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
I built the computer 10-11 months ago and I have never had problems with it. It worked fine without any signs of trouble until this morning.
  4. My hardware
    • Asus P5Q-E
    • Intel E8400 (stock speed)
    • VisionTek Radeon HD 4870
    • 4 x 2 GB OCZ Technology PC2 8500 1066MHZ Reaper HPC edition OCZ2RPR10664GK
    • Antec EarthWatts 500W EA-500D

I'm thinking my next step should be to purchase a power supply at Fryes and see if that fixes the problem but I don't know if there are any other steps I could try. Thank you for any help.

Agreed. The 4870 will use more power than your whole system. I just built an i7 system with a EAH4870 and I tried using a 500 watt supply and it just kept shutting down. I threw it on the power meter and it was using over 300 watts. I put a 700 watt supply in there and it never shut down.

Thanks for the input. I looked at it a little more and i figured out that it was the whole system that was was flashing on and off and not the video card. the video card was the most apparent but also the case fan and the cd drive all spun for a second and shut down like a car that has trouble starting. I will purchase a new power supply today but I'm not sure how much power I will need. I was going to go with 610 but I guess I'll try to get something with 700w to be on the safe side. Hopefully I can get something decent for 100 at fryes. Will reply with an update thanks.

Alright, I installed a new 700 watt power supply and turned it on today and there was no blinking this time. Everything started to turn non like normal for 5 seconds and then everything turned off for like 2 seconds and then turned back on again with all the fans spinning, cd lights on etc. Nothing flicks on and off anymore, neither the lights nor the fans but I have no idea what makes turn off and then on again without displaying anything on my monitor at all. I'm thinking this is a motherboard problem now but now I'm just as confused as ever. I guess I could buy a graphics card tomorrow and plug that in but I doubt that will change anything... Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you forgot to connect the P4 power connector? If that isn't it, discharge your cmos. There should be a jumper on the board to do that. If you can't find it, pop the battery out for 30 seconds then put it back in. You also could have knocked something loose swapping out the power supply.

Wow, it seemed too easy. Resetting the CMOS did the trick and my computer is working just fine now. Now if only I didn't break the push-pin on my heatsink when I removed it to put in the power supply, sigh. Thanks a lot for your help Matt.
