My sister from out of town (across the country!) called and needed all sorts of help with her old laptop after temporarily reclaiming it from her daughter (her new one is being repaired). After diggings around in boot.ini to fix other issues, I eventually got a motherboard chipset issue fixed that allowed us to install the correct graphics driver to restore a lot of what was wrong (resolution, performance, DVD playback). Unfortunately, we could not get audio from Windows Media Player. Well, we could get audio if we used it to play an MP3, but DVDs are completely silent. It doesn't appear to be a problem with it defaulting to different audio tracks or in the Windows advanced volume controls. We used the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility to switch between an Intervideo decoder and a Nero one, but the problem persisted.
As a temporary solution, we had already installed VLC and it plays the DVD with audio just fine. WTF's up with Windows Media Player? She doesn't use the Mediaa Center eHome application, but is there any reason to believe that it will work if WMP11 didn't?
