No android tablet mentioned at google i/o? What should we buy?

The title more or less describes my question, but I'll expand: I'm in the market for a new 9-10 inch android tablet (preferring to run stock android) and it does not appear that google announced the future release of a new larger tablet at google i/o. If google had announced something, I probably would have ordered it today.

For reference I'm currently using an HP Touchpad with Cyanogenmod 11 on it. It's actually not bad, but one of the games I play, Dungeon Keeper, makes graphical compromises to keep some predetermined framerate and I'd like to run at full speed.

I'm interested in opinions on my options:

1) Buy one of the new Samsung 10 inch tablets (tab S, tab pro) and run touchwiz or cyanogenmod. Pros: can get something "good" right away.
2) Buy an older model tablet (asus tf700 or Nexus 10). Pros: cheap and probably better than touchpad
3) Wait for new better tablet (google nexus? or something with tegra K1 in it). Pros: get "the best" hardware.

I'm leaning towards option 3. What do the more informed think?

I really doubt Google has a 10 inch tablet in the works anyway, most likely if we see a new Nexus tablet announced soon, it'll be around 8 inches.

1. I think this is your best option, a Galaxy Tab S or Pro. You get a bit more performance with the Pro and a better display with the S (shame the S didn't have a Snapdragon in it).

2. I've been burned by ASUS too many times, their tablet look good on paper, but in reality seem to always have some kind of issues.

3. I think the next Google tablet will be a Nexus 8, but I'm skeptical it'll have a Tegra K1, probably a Snapdragon 801, maybe an 805. If your heart is set on a 10 inch tablet, then option 3 is probably not a good choice.

What makes you say that? Do you have a source?

Probably the sheer amount of time since the Nexus 10 was released, which is well over the usual annual release cycle for Nexus devices (it's been more than a year and a half).

Is there any source that says that Google does have a 10" tablet in development?

Otherwise you may as well say they're developing a mind control device because there's no source that says they're not.

No, it's an opinion I've formed based on several things...

1. Nexus 10 didn't sell well and has been left to rot without a successor for over 19 months and counting.

2. Nexus 7 was far more loved and successful.

3. The trend right now seems to be towards affordable 8 inch tablets.

4. There are repeated rumors of an 8 inch Nexus tablet.

5. There isn't a single rumor I've heard of a new Nexus 10 tablet.

I've seen some stuff about a Nexus 8 inch tablet by HTC actually being 8.9 inches. That might be big enough if only Google would make it official and I could see it. I'm reluctant to go lower in size though.

Another question is how big a leap in performance do folks expect the tegra k1 to be above the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor in the Samsung models. The thought of PS3-level graphic processing power (which I realize is only what is advertised and may not be realized in everyday gaming situations) makes it very intriguing. If the performance jump is big enough, I'd definitely wait. This option need not be a nexus device.

The number of people posting and speculating without mentioning volantis is amazing to me. You'd think this was an amazon discussion.

As for OP, I'd pick option 3. It might not be until the fall, but it's looking very much like that HTC 8.9 Nexus tablet will be dropping this year.

4. There are repeated rumors of an 8 inch Nexus tablet.

The most believable rumor so far talks about a Nexus 9, high end tablet with 2. iPad mini price range.

Even if some things doesn't make much sense, like OIS (maybe they want to promote some pictures/video features) and the render looking more like a placeholder.

For gaming, K1 will destroy all current options. If that's OP's main concern, he should definitely wait.

For productivity, multi window or nothing.

Every single Tegra release has been hyped beyond belief and every one has been a dismal failure that never came close to living up to Nvidia' claims regarding performance.

Heck, they claimed Tegra 2 could beat a Core 2 Duo at one point while in reality it can't play a 720p video without choking.

I am planning on picking up a Galaxy Tab S on the way home from work and I haven't seen any rumors or speculation that would make me think twice about getting it.

K1 has nothing in common with those "Tegra ULP" units with cut-down shaders that did who knows what.

We know exactly what a Kepler unit can do, and that's what this is. (Unfortunately we also know how much more ppw Nvidia was able to squeeze with Maxwell, which is why I'm waiting for 20nm and "M1".)

Actually I'm more interested in the 8" tablet that was mentioned, but, please, troll on.

After the hype and disappointment of the Tegra 2, Tegra 3, and Tegra 4, I'm remaining unhyped for the Tegra K1. :)

Nexus 10 was large, bulky (big bezels), and not that great overall. It was priced like an iPad practically, and with Google and other software developers not serious enough about Android tablets, its easy to see why it got neglected.

Price makes products attractive, which is why the Nexus 7 did so well.

It was also the highest resolution tablet at the time, beating the iPad with retina display. I believe it stayed the highest resolution tablet for quite some time as well.

I can see why it was neglected, that screen was too much of a burden for the SoCs of the time. Google could do very well if they decided to go 10"+ again, especially after the S810 is available. I doubt Google would have used an Exynos if they had any other option for driving that display reasonably. I also see that tablet as a perfect representation of the Google/Samsung relationship. Mostly in that Google had no other options and were forced to go with it and let Samsung have more of a say than they should.

I'm not sure if volantis will be their only new tablet with its middle of the pack size, or if it's going to stand apart as a premium priced device. It's seeming like it will be the only Nexus tablet from here on out.

I just picked up a tab pro 8.4 at best buy for $250 to replace my aging launch day iPad 2 64GB / 3G. That's a killer deal and it's about as high end as android tablets get (exc the 8.4 S which is still $399).

Very noticeable performance difference despite the much higher resolution.

I don't care for Samsung UI changes though.
