No additional fee for City Of Villains!!

Wow.... bold move, but the one that give the franchise the best chance for continued success.

One of the major selling points is going to be the blurry areas between both games like heroes invading villains lairs and heroes having missions to stop villains missions, but these all occur in the CoV world, so to get your hero there, you'd need CoV in addition to CoH, but the additional fee was a concern since people would be more inclined to just play CoV and pay one fee and this might hurt the balance.

Anyway, I thought that was a nice move on their part. It also means that if you pick up CoV, you can just buy CoH on clearance somewhere for $20 and get a whole different game world for free with your CoV subscription.

So.. the game is going to be free or are they simply not charging double subscription fees to play both? Do any MMORPGs charge additional monthly fees for expansions or is CoV a true sequel and separate game?

Saw this at lunch, was floored. Rumor was it was going to be like a $5 per month bump in subscription which wasn't bad at all, but this is amazing.

CoV is a totally seperate game with different classes, zones and content that can be played all by itself, but can interface with CoH. The game won't be free, usual one-time purchase. Already available for preorder.

um its just an expansion why would they up the fee?
you pay for the game and add it to your COH game which adds the new code..
no diffferent than UO or EQs billion expansions why would they raise it?

Incorrect. CoV is a separate game completely. You can buy and play only CoV if you like. Totally separate world and classes. and you don't need CoH to play it.

No double subscription. If you only get CoV, you'll be paying the standard fee.

So you pay $x to play COV, or you pay $x to play COH, or you pay $x to play both (if you buy a copy of both)?

CoH's expansions have been free all along, where I believe at least for EQ you had to pay for them. As mentioned, this isn't an expansion.

Yep. And $x is the same price folks have been paying all along for just CoH alone.

Ya. And CoH, by itself is a fairly throughly fleshout out MMORPG by this point that has already undergone 5 full free expansions which have added everything from skills to classes to new zones.

dont remember any mmorpg charging additional monthly fee to play an expansion

What makes you think it's an expansion? And expansion requires the original game by definition, and COV does not. It's a standalone game and sequel dammit, why haven't you read anything?

so...
i can buy CoV and play online for free?
or only if i have a CoH account?
i used to play city of heroes. its a great game but i played too much.

This isn't an expansion or a true standalone. It's an expansalone. I can't believe people actually thought they would be charged for both games if they had subs at both. I never even fathomed that idea.

Wow, this thread was old when I hit it... oops. 😉 So, has anyone picked it up yet? How is it compared to CoH or is it the same thing under a different guise?

I got it. I haven't really gotten in to it yet..THB I've been playing my Hero more. I just can't find a class that I like on the villain side.

But is the gameplay pretty much the same? Do you just feel like you're running around a 'dark version' of Atlas Park and such?

Fingoflin269 is right, it's not a true expansion nor is it a true sequel.

I see it more as an expansion though, since you can log into either CoH or CoV and you get the same exact interface (just a different color, ooh).

I got it for my little brother, and played a small bit. From what I played, it's the same as CoH, just that now you're an escaped con.

Then again, I only played the first few missions, but 1) it felt the same as CoH and 2) my brother wanted to play.

They seem to be CoH classes with different names for the most part. (Okay, the CoV scrapper has a hide ability, wow)

Everything is just darker and scummier.

One thing that's here and they just added to CoH too is BOT heroes/villains to assist you during missions. You rescue them, then they follow you and help. Pretty cool for the solo player. I had four helping me out one mission.

No empathy or similar power set so there are so R U H3LR messages. I also like the villain archetypes better than the heroes....particularly corrupter....playing ice/radiation.

But, ya, same exact gameplay. At higher levels you can build lairs and go on PvP missions versus players from CoH on your server.

I probably won't play past the free month. 🙂
