No AC97 sound

I just finished building my first system, all went fairly smooth except for my sound problem i have none.
I loaded the drivers for the ac97 Via PCI Controller and device manager reports no problems but in Control panel >multimedia everything is greyed out and no speaker icon in the taskbar either.
Everything seems ok in the bios ,sound is enabled but when i load windows it detects new hardware ( PCI communications device)but i cannot find a driver for it and it has an exclamation mark next to it in device manager under Other.
I tried Add/remove programs with win98 se disk and installed all components for multimedia and still no sound.
To say the least i am frustrated .
Any info on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated!
System specs: 950 Duron>128meg ram>10 gig hd>win98 SE> Abit MoBo kt20 with onboard AC97

You need the relevant drivers for the sound chip. They should be on the motherboard CD, or you can get them from the motherboard manufacturer website, no doubt.

I got some generic via sound drivers from their site and it worked just fine🙂
Thanks for the response earthman.
