Take a look here.
Is Granite Bay dead before it starts?
Posted on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 by David

I have spoken to 2 companies today about this product and they have just told me the same thing - they are not doing it. These companies are ABIT and EPOX. The Epox solution might not come as such a shock but the ABIT sure is interesting - they had shown pictures of there solution the GBX MAX range and we had been talking to them about solutions.

ABIT have left it for a few reasons, it isn't the latest technology - Dual Channel has been around for a while, and the performance doesn?t warrant the cost. ABIT and Intel discussed the product and they are going to aim for Springdale. Granite Bay is not featuring on many companiess Desktop or Workstation board but more of a server solution. It will be interesting if we even see Granite Bay on retail shelves. We know that MSI have been sampling solutions so has DFI - we have both in house. I am personally shocked over ABITs decision as we were depending on them in house to make an 'overclockers' board. There are other manufacturers whom are creating the boards - DFI, IWill, ASUS, FiC, Tyan, Gigabyte. We have not yet had confirmation from other manufacturers but we will keep you up to date.

The biggest talking point is that the chipset isn't being adopted by 2 of the big plays in the desktop arena - the server side (Tyan etc) should be another story. With the chipset only having a short time on the Intel line-up I wonder what the outcome will be? I have also heard Intel do not have high supply of the chipsets - thus slowing down the process.

Update:
Apparently it is all up in arms at the moment - they have samples ready and working. But they are still trying to establish if there is a market or a need for the product. I think it might be a bit of a risk that is why there is the hold off. Another company stated that MSI was doubtful over the product release as well and are unsure if retail boards will hit.

So - there we have it - some scoop for you guys today!
Seems some mfgrs are going to hold out till Sprindale??

those 200fsb cpu/moboards could be the death of overclocking.
looks like intel is getting upset about us boosting their CPUs so much :(

theyve cancelled the 667fsb "C" chips and it could be the reason why theyre making GBay so unattractive :disgust:

the performance doesn?t warrant the cost.

This is my opinion. I can't see that GB will be any cheaper or faster than a Rambus solution. And I couldn't see paying more for the performance gain of Rambus over my PE.

you said exactly what i was going to say... GB apparently has alot better memory bandwidth... but real world tests basically say "who cares"

the 845pe will be best overall chipset for sure.

This might be Intel's way for keeping Rambus alive and competing for the top spot for the P4.
