No 5.1 Audio from Onboard Realtek

I'm getting sound through the onboard Realtek ALC850 on my Chaintech VNF4 board. It's supposed to support 7.1 audio, but when I connect it to my receiver via the optical connection I only get normal stereo. I'm currently using the latest AC'97 drivers. I've tried the Nvidia drivers but they don't seem to work with the optical connection, only analog. The Realtek sound effect program is useless since the tests is has only work with analog connections. So I'm totally stumped here.
