No 2nd thumb button on Logitech G5

This has been bothering me for quite some time now. Why would Logitech remove the second thumb button on the new G5?

Many people as well as I use that thumb button for many many things, including browsing and games. Many people are not buying that mouse because of the lack of the button and I haven?t heard of one person that?s going to buy it because it lacks it.

I remember reading somewhere that Logitech removed it so people wouldn?t accidentally click on it. Are people that clumsy? Maybe my grandma would accidentally click on it but no gamer would do that, which is the main target for the mouse.

So the big question is what was Logitech thinking? To me it would be like removing the shifting mechanism on the steering wheel of F1 cars and put it to the side of the driver so grandma won?t accidentally click on them.

I hope they come up with even a new mouse with a better look than that ugly orange spot, and a 2nd thumb button.

What do you people think of this issue?

I havn't missed the second button. I always found the forward side button difficult to reach anyway and only used it for rarely used functions, like turning on a flashlight, etc.

I think the G5 has great potential but so far I am having trouble adjusting to the sensitivity. Everything just seems too hyper and I havn't been able to find the sweet spot yet. I'm coming from a mx510, which IIRC is 800 dpi, so I thought that the G5 would behave the same at that dpi mode, however it seems at least 50% faster.

You could always go with the new razer copperhead. It has the 2000 dpi but both side buttons (also made for both left and right handed people).

Fumbling furiously about the keyboard which some poor owners of the G5 must be doing lol

I used an annoying mouse with 2 buttons and a ball. Just like I used a brick as a cellphone, a PC with no GPU, windows ME(lol)... etc etc etc...

Just accept that removing a second thumb button was a step backwards. And for the one who said 1 thumb, 1 button... many of us have 5 fingers with about 17 keys assigned to movement and weapons in just one FPS game. Many of our fingers are already too busy pressing keys to add another more because of the lost 2nd thumb button. If you played games seriously you would maybe understand.

why not get that macro mini keyboard?
all it is is the numLock and the # with 2 shifts.
All of them are meant for gamers to macro there instead of the f#, alt# ctrl#... can be positioned right side or leftside of the keyboard, depending if your righty or lefty or using arrows keys vs wasd.

That's my whole point. Games already require 10+ different functions to be used within the game, not all of which can be assigned to mouse buttons. You have to use the keyboard regardless, so what difference does it make having to use one more keyboard key instead of it being on a mouse button? I was never able to reach that forward thumb button well anyway, I couldn't use it for something urgent in a firefight. e.g. in BF2 I used it for commander voice comm, which is infrequently used.

The loss of the extra thumb button is a minor issue. I wish they left it on, but its removal didn't preclude me from buying the mouse which is awesome in every other respect.

I found the front mouse button very convinient in WoW. Use it for Mark on my hunter, and dispell for my priest. I also attach shift+mouse5 (i think that's what it is) for other functions etc. I've just come to use that button very often. It just seems like an odd omission. I think the OP is mainly wondering if a) the majority of people didn't find it useful or b) if there is a technical/buisness reason not to include it.

That's quite the oversight if true. It only took me a few days to get to the point where I would really miss both the forward and back thumb buttons on my MX-500 if they weren't there. Every time I have to use a computer that's not my own, I really notice how less efficient browsing is with a regular 2-button mouse.

Get Opera, then. Mouse gestures take care of forward and backward buttons.

yes, logitech screwed up removing the second thumb buttom i dont see why they did it. that to me was a turn off plus the ugly colors they chose for the G5 and G7.

i will be getting a mx518 to replace my mx1000. back to wired mouse again.

I've gotta agree. I don't care so much about the colors (I could get used to them), but I really don't think I would want a mouse that doesn't have the two side buttons...I use them all the time in web browsing and in games (switching to next/previous weapon, or other things). I had really been looking forward to the G7, but I think I'll just hang on to my MX700 for a while now. :)

Keep in mind that my complaints were with using computers that I don't own, so I can't exactly install software on them. Besides, I like FireFox just fine and I can obviously use my own mouse on my own computer, so switching to Opera is a moot point. I'd much rather just click a key with my thumb, than move my whole wrist to do a gesture.

anyways... for those of you who wont't buy the G5 because of the missing button, the razer copperhead seems like a better mouse and it has the second thumb button.

Definately wouldn't buy the G5, solely due to the missing thumb button. Two thumb buttons are perfect for quick-switching weapons in BF2.
