I think you'll need more cash for a system that can edit HD video very quickly... First off I'd get at least 512 ram, and you're probably going to need a lot of hard drive space too. You need to be more specific about what you mean exactly by editing because that's what will determine what you really need.

Yeah your going to need alot more than $500 if you want to edit alot of video effectively. Video editing is very CPU intensive.

i should say that the main goal is to be able to view HD content, editing will be about 10% of what I want to do....i should have put my limit at $600, fyi

I dunno, if you get a athlon dualie and some good hard drives and lots of memory. Pacific Digital has made a pci ide card that sounds promising Discstaq. I don't know what programs you'll use, but if they are not smp compatible just get an athlon xp and epox 8rda+. My encodes are 1/3 of what they were from an Athlon tbird 1200. I'm gonna get a 2100 xp and oveclock it some and expect to be able to cce encode w 4 passes, a dvd in prolly 3-4 hrs. Check out doom9.org for what folks are using. xp & 8rda+ & twinmos pc3200 ddr and 8mb 120 gb hd's & maybe the discstaq and I think you're ready.

Also check out avsforums. The Radeom seems to be the card of choice for viewing.

Send me a valid E-Mail address that can open Windows Office Apps, & I'll send you
the Excel Spreadsheet that I use to configure 'Build-Your-Own' systems for my classes.
