No, they're legit. I bought a couple for decoration, but they died because I forgot to feed them. But I found that if you seal the jar after they die, they'll look healthy for several months.

Why would you think they're not? Bonsai kittens are an art form... it might be a bit unconfortable for the kitten at first, but before long the kitten gets used to it and you can even get them to purr sometimes too. The whole process only takes four weeks, as kittens grow quickly into their shape. In some ways I think it's actually good for the overall health of the cat.
