was: how to take apart a cpu socket (socket A)

I am kicking myself in the head.

I have a dual AMD (Athlon MP) setup. The motherboard does not support BIOS multiplier changing. So, I checked out a guide here which describes shorting for different multipliers with wire in the cpu socket.

First time it worked like a charm but I'm pretty sure that some wire has broken off in the cpu socket. I need to take the top (sliding part) off of the socket and clean any broken wires out.

Thoughts??

Nevermind --- I found the piece of wire smashed up against the bottom of the CPU ... everything is working fine!

Next time around, to set the multiplier of the processors, grab a toothpick, some conductive paint or ink, and touch a dab at the base of the processor pins that need joined. Much easier than wire, and can be removed with nail polish remover if needed... 😉
