I have already ordered an i5-12400F and MSI B660M Mortar Wifi board and am torn between buying a 2x8GB CAS 16 DDR4 3200 kit and a 2x8GB CAS 18 DDR4 3600 kit since they're pretty similarly priced. Don't really feel like spending way more for a 2x8GB CAS 16 DDR4 3600 kit. For AAA gaming I don't care too much, as I'll be targeting 60 fps and can't see 12400F plus either RAM kit keeping me from hitting that in AAA games. But for emulation I'll pretty much always be cpu bound so RAM choice could be pretty important. For emulation am I probably better off with the higher throughput of the latter RAM kit or should I care more about latency and pick the former kit?

On my server I'm using 3600 and laptop 3200 both of which are 12700 systems. RAM for me palys more into things like Chrome that like a lot of ram.

Look at the total sum of the components rather than just one point. I'm using sn850 drives in both systems and that makes a bigger difference than the ram. The server is headless and no GPU and the laptop has a 3060. When launching a game everything loads into the ram in the GPU and maybe a small bit into the system RAM.

On average the os though uses 4gb of ram. Chrome adds 6gb of ram load with serveral tabs open. I usually set a budget of $100 for RAM and go from there. For that I put 32 in the laptop and only went with 16 in the server for $60. Both run great and no issues with things closing due to resources.

Thank you for the reply but after posting realized the DDR4 3600 kit still had the same first word latency as the DDR4 3200 kit I was looking at so for basically the same price I ordered the DDR4 3600 kit since it had the same latency but better throughput.

At this point it's kind of moot with the speeds being relatively the same unlike the old days when we had to deal with DDR3 and prior where it made a bigger difference when using spinners and slow CPUs. GPUs that didn't have crap for RAM on them.

With the ADL and most recent CPUs though the RAM gets used for the system and iGPU shares 50% of the total RAM for its own use as needed. Since you're going F it's less important. I have to give it to Intel on the Laptop side so far the Iris XE is miles ahead of the UHD platform. I can run Chrome smoothly w/o forcing it to use the dGPU like before on my prior laptop.

13th gen should make some minor improvements as well. 14th gen though will shift to a larger die being used and combining chiplets to gain more performance by piecing it together like a puzzle onto the die.
