Heard this on cnn, still looking for a link. Seems rather strange considering they just begged us for aid, maybe they need this in light os "US pre-emptive policy", would someone else please send them some food also, we don't mind, but some help would be nice....

Time to start seriously pressurising the Chinese to get real with their "cordial" buddies. The question is who's going to do it and how?

Cheers,

Andy

The best thing the US can do is to step back and let China and Russia take care of thier bastard step-child of a nation (NK).

Well since Russia can't even take care of Chechnia and China would rather take care of Taiwan I would'nt hold your breath. I still think one moning we'll wake up to a nice sized crater where the reactor used to be.

the dumbest thing anyone in the bush admin could have done was say that the iraqi war was pre-emptive instead of a resumption of the previous war.

And if they do nothing?

Then North Korea will effectively starve to death without massive food aid from some other source

Sanctions didn't work in Iraq. What makes anyone think that they'll work in NK.

Who needs sanctions? They have no viable exports (outside missles). Without food aid that they are unable to purchase they will lose over 50% of their population to starvation. The US alliance (US, Japan and SK) and China are the only suppliers of aid to NK. Without our assitance they starve (unless China buys them food). Massive starvation will drive millions across the border into China and they will be forced to deal with the red-headed step child they created.

When they start straving what do they have to loose by killing the 38,000 US service men stationed there? Never screw around with desperate people. To unpredicatble. They have aready said as much and they said they'd release nuke tech to terrorists.

Exactly. Their people have been starving anyway. Remember the stories of them eating grass?

If we're gonna hit their reactors we better be able to hit the 10-30K artillery pieces they have arrayed along the border at the same time. Or a lot of people in Seoul will probably die.

I will not accept our supporting that despotic regime out of fear any longer. They made their bed over the last 50 years and it's time they took a nap in it. China will not be able to tolerate the refugee influx and will be forced to control them.

I don't think anyone wants to support tiny tim, it's just not clear what a prudent plan of action is if China/SK/Japan can't convince them to play ball.

Does anyone notice how quiet China is on this issue ?

Here we have this huge country - China, going through it's socio-ecconomic industrialization boom,
coming on like gangbusters in production of super hi-tech parts (Just about everybodys computer)
with more and more coming from within the Chinese mainland, and many other things.

And they won't do squat.

Their neighbor country, sharing kinfolk and bloodlines on both sides of their borders.
All they have to do is help by driving across a common border.
The economic power in immediate proximity and they are just waiting.

And why does not China seem that worried ?
They know something but still let them starve.

We've been propping up that lousy dictator for years to avoid the threat of war. They think we are afraid of it and that's how they can manipulate us. I'm tired of it, we should ignore them and let the people starve. China has faced little more than a few thousand people coming across the border (an open border mind you), if a million people come across China will have to do something. They helped create them, it's time they had to deal with what they created.

Heh, a war with North Korea would be difficult. With the advent of nuclear I really don't want to know what could happen. Kim Young looks more crazy than Saddamn to use WMDs.

Thats true, but they couldnt feed their people with the sales from nukes, even if they sold them for 1 billion USD each. And to sell them for that, they'd have to pop one off to demostrate they work, which short term, puts them even farther behind...

With what money?

probably with the money the US will pay them to stfu about the nukes :D

I'm sorry, but President Clinton is no longer in office. That method of diplomacy with North Korea will not be used again, after it so successfully prevented them from developing weapons since 1994! :)

Speak for yourself! Diplomacy is what we need, no pre-emptive strike like Iraq plz! I'm sorry but unlike Iraq, North Korea actually has WMDs such as nukes and they actually have a delivery system to dish out the pain. They're crazy and unpredictable, the last thing we need is to shoot first.

I live right by DC... so I rather not have nuclear winds blowing my way THANKS!

Actually, DC is out of range. Places like LA and other on the West Coast are the ones that would need to worry about that
