NJ school bus and dump truck collide. Scene described as "horrific"

Bus was ripped right off the chassis but the body doesn't look that badly damaged. Hopefully the kids inside made out ok.

I never understood why they don't have seatbelts on school buses ? Like they are immune from being thrown around just because there is another seat in front of them?

There are seatbelts on buses, at least when I was in High School and that was like almost 20 years ago. We just never wore them because it's a pain in the ass.

Depends on the state. NHTSA has an article on why they are not mandated at the national level.

Interesting. My whole life growing up (which I was in high school ~12 years ago) we didn't have seat belts.

I think a large determining factor of if a school bus should have seat belts is if the general routes in the area require getting on an interstate or a highway where the speed limit is 65+ mph. I don't care if your school bus is designed to withstand damage, a huge ass truck plowing into you at those speeds will knock the shit out of everyone, guaranteed.

My routes in school were all through neighborhoods and side-roads and stuff, so we were never going that fast.

Doesn't seem like anybody died, so that's good. Fuckin news outlets though are really running with that "horrific" description.

There are reports of multiple fatalities. One I saw first thing said a teacher and student but others seem to suggest there might be more.

Seems they are being deliberately vague as to the number of fatalities.

At this time, it can be confirmed that there are fatalities as a result of this crash. The exact number and the identity of each individual is being withheld at this time pending formal notification of next of kin. All other individuals injured in this crash have been transported to local hospitals for care.

That bus driver's record, WTF!

1) He's 77 years old.
2) His license was suspended 14 times since 1975
3) 8 speeding summons, most recent 2001

He got his CDL, 2013. That would had made him 68-69 years old. My guess is age isn't an issue when you're transporting kids and educators? What a joke.

Supposedly he missed the turn to their destination. He got back on the highway and attempted to do an illegal u-turn in one of those offical only turns. He tried to do a uturn on the highway. In a bus!

School district should get sued for hiring a driver like that. I also can't believe there is no age limit on CDLs.

I know of a person in Kansas that has had multiple heart attacks, surgeries, etc. Old man chain smoker in his late 60s with zero !@#$s given for his own health. School bus driver.

A friend who is friends with one of the state troopers on the scene, was told the scene was horrific. Trooper would likely need counseling himself after seeing what he saw. Stupid old bus driver tried to make an illegal u-turn on one of those official only connection paths, didn't even stop to check for oncoming traffic and just pulled out. Bus will of course require more than one lane to finish the turn and pulled right in front of a full speed dump truck. Trooper arrived at the scene and saw the teacher was decapitated and multiple kids missing either an arm or a leg. They really need to enhance the driving test for old people and require them to test every year to see if they still have all their functions to drive.

I don't know if school bus drivers fit into the same category as over the road 18 wheelers, but for them the feds mandate a medical exam and certificate no less than every two years. If that is the case, his age is irrelevant.

Odds are the municipality farmed out the bus operation to a private corporation, nearly all do this.

At least the ones that are going to be getting on the highway. Tooling around the neighborhood at 15mph I can understand being way less stringent. No way this is the guy who should have been chosen for field trip duty.
