NJ -> NYC Commuters

I'll be graduating next year, and will likely be working in the city. Living in the city sounds like something that could be fun, but also really expensive. So, I wouldn't mind living someplace a short train ride away from NYC. What are some good areas to look for that are safe, and inexpensive? (Jersey City, Newport, Hoboken, Harrison, etc?)
 
Hoboken.


I live in North Brunswick, my door to door is 1 hour and 45 minutes. I take the NJTransit train into the city every morning.
 
hoboken would be an easy commute. this past summer, working as an intern, i had to take a 45 min train ride just to get to hoboken to take the path in

Don't know yet, but most of the jobs i've been applying to (IT related) are located in north jersey, or nyc.
 
Many financial firms are moving their ops and IT to Jersey City.

Have you considered Queens or Brooklyn? Anywhere from 30min to 1.5hrs to get into the city/Jersey City.

Hoboken is alright, but the commute to the financial district isn't all that great. I'm one stop closer and live in a more of a lux building compared to aptments in hoboken.

The downside of living where I do is that the hood / low income folk are two blocks away, so your stuff isn't all that safe... and you get to deal with that kinda stuff when grocery shopping etc.

I've seen some sh!t already at the local target. Little black kid (6 years old?) decked out in fubu gear carrying a stuffed toy that resembled a pimp elmo. As I'm passing him in the isle, the kid squeezes the toy and $0.50 "In da club" starts playin..

Ditto. Commute from Queens to Midtown Manhattan on the E or F is 30-40min, depending on precise home/work locations. I've heard that Brooklyn to Downtown is comparable.
 
probably depends on where you are going. i believe hoboken is a 10 min path ride to downtown, which is what I did. If I wasn't 45 min away from hoboken it would have been very easy

So don't move there otherwise you may have to deal with "those" people.
 
I live in Lakewood, NJ.
I used to commute to the city.
I don't recommend it to anyone.
There are days I spent 4 hours in the car.
 
Find a job first...working uptown, move to queens...working downtown, brooklyn might work for you.
 
If you're working in downtown live in Brooklyn if you work in midtown or up move to queens.
Jersey (Hoboken, Newport) is all nice and great but you'll appreciate being able to take a cab home for $10-$20 versus $50 when you're getting shitfaced each weekend in the city!

PS: I live in Astoria, Queens and have a 15min commute to midtown.
 
i'd recommend hoboken. it's starting to get more expensive these days but you can probably find good deals if you have a roommate. the social and night life is also better for someone in your position.

there are good commute options to midtown or downtown nyc from either uptown or downtown hoboken.
 
Where is your home? If your home is close to where your job is (I'd say 30 mins max commute one way), then live at home for a couple of years.
