Extensive editing done, so I thought I'd post again:

It (PBO) does almost all of that, key feature being SMB mounts and ability to play just about any format natively (ie no transcoding).

I don't see the advantages to the $200 product. For example, the web browser in the product is horrible. The RAM point is academic. DTS-HD is nice, but how many really have 7.1 vs 5.1? etc...

PBO is _really_ slick with MediaWall and MEDE8ER firmware. Cool stuff. Takes an afternoon to set up, and best if your movies are in their own subfolders on your SMB share already (and best if you can download scraping tools for all the IMDB artwork, etc.) but overall, this is one very, very slick product!

Are you talking about flashing the Patriot Box with MEDE8ER firmware and not using Patriot's own firmware?

Yes. That changes the GUI presentation layer so it looks nicer. If you don't want to do that, the GUI isn't as pretty, but the functionality is still all there.

I've read about hacks and flashing media players with another brand's/manufacturer's firmware - but I thought you don't do that unless the original media player maker stopped providing firmware support or their current firmwares are not adequate enough?

I have heard patriot has been really good with support and firmware updates...

Nixeus's customer support and firmware development has been superb so far...

Patriot - Firmware - sure, it works, it's just ugly.

Re: Not adequate enough - it's fine, but MEDE8ER is a much nicer look with album art, review data, IMDB data, etc. For $45, get a PBO, flash it with that firmware, and boom, you have a beautiful, highly functional media player that can do just about anything...
