Nix server/distro befuddlement

Hey hey everyone, I am having trouble figuring out what setup I need to have. I have a windows XP x86 tower with an Intel Pentium 4 processor, 1 gig of ram, and some additional storage on it. I need a Linux distribution/software configuration that allows me to plug it in to my router via Ethernet and act as a server/workstation. Ideally, it would need to be capable of allowing me to access the CLI/GUI from my laptop and Android when I am away from home. Suggestions on a distro and software? Thanks in advance.

Remote GUI tends to suck most of the time, so if you can be happy with CLI and files, any distro and SSH/SFTP will do it.
