I know there are several stripped down 'nix distros with routing software, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest some that are similar to Cisco IOS in form & function.

Yes, it's for learning. I have Boson's network simulator and it's nice to familiarize oneself with the basic commands/interface. However, my hope is to actually get 3-4 VM's running a very lightweight 'nix distro and then attach real Windows and Linux clients vs. the very very basic virtual computers in Boson's simulator.

Depending on how well it goes, I may experiment with ditching my SOHO router and replacing it with one of these... but running on real hardware of course, not a VM.

Jeff, you may also want to look at Dynamips/Dynagen - these packages can simulate a Cisco 7200 and run a real IOS image.
