Chrysler/Toyota/Honda sell ~10K minivans each per month.
Nissan sells 1.2-2K Quest minivans a month.

What gives? Is it really that bad?

They made it ugly as sin, just like Honda/Toyota models. Modern 'mini' vans are ugly, bloated, and terrible to drive. Every generation is worse than the one before it...

Lol, I'd never actually seen one of the current ones on the road, just looked it up. It's damn near the ugliest thing I've ever seen on four wheels, not as ugly as that one Lincoln whale thing, but close.

Minivans are terrific for their intended purpose, but I'll never understand why carmakers lately make intentionally hideous vehicles (Acura anyone?).

The current gen is Pontiac Aztec ugly.

Also, I hate to be the one to say this, but minivans are targeted at a VERY conservative, middle-upper class, white demographic. Nissan is the brand of choice for Mexicans (seriously, it's a HUGE brand in Mexico). The other side of the tracks is where all the old Quests go to die. Mommy is wearing Vera Wang, has bleached hair and a D&G purse. Does she want to be mistaken for her maid? No. That's why Mommy drives an Odyssey Touring.

I think the Mexicans you are talking about are not brand loyal, and buy used and whatever is cheapest. Having just looked at a picture of the Quest, it just looks ugly. Almost like a big, less interesting Scion xB.

The thing is hideous, as are most of Nissan's offerings lately.

And also as mentioned, no hot toyota mom.

I love Nissan and I think the Quest is a POS..

The Sienna isn't much better, its pure tupperware inside... But at least it looks good.

Nissan keeps making the Quest weird. Last time it was interior, now it's exterior. This one has JDM styling, which doesn't appeal to Americans. Weird can be OK for other segments, but minivan buyers aren't looking to live on the edge.

the previous Quest model was really nice. wish they followed up on that design. can't know the sienna too much, it looks pretty cool for a minivan. the odyssey just looks weird. sickens me every time i look at it

I really like the look of the new quest. the previous gen was kind of a POS. good motor, but that was about it.

I don't think they sell all that well because they never seem to have stock of any. When I shopped vans, I could go to a honda or toyota dealer and find a dozen or more on the lot... I couldn't find a single quest in any of 4 local dealers.

If I were buying today, it would be between the honda and nissan

Don't mean to necro, but I went mini-van shopping this weekend.

I actually REALLY want to like the Quest. But I am probably going to go with the Odyssey.

The interior is so far above the others it is kind of ridiculous, it really does feel like a luxury car, and this is on the almost base SV model. The headroom is great, I can sit in the 3rd row and still have 1-2" headroom, I am brushing the ceiling in the others. The seats are comfortable and I actually really like the way they fold, 10s and you can get to the maximum cargo configuration, only the Chrysler stow n' go can match this. The CVT transmission makes for a really smooth ride.

I can see how people hate the exterior appearance, it is a bit jarring, but really that is not the reason I am passing on it. The driving position feels almost truck like, the giant side mirrors contribute to that feeling. It kind of feels like a pimped out cargo van. Only 7 seats. The maximum cargo capacity is FAR short of all its competitors. Plus, they are selling so few that I have a feeling I would be stuck with it when I wanted to sell it in ~10 years.

all that said, if all you need to do is haul 7 or less people this thing is worth a serious look. It just excels at hauling people. The seating is really super comfortable. Unfortunately, the reduced utility (lower seating capacity and reduced cargo space) really doesn't fit that well in the American minivan market. I think this is its biggest problem.

Minivan + premium fuel = fail. Ever since quest got the VQ, it required premium. That never felt right to those who were in the market for a minivan.
