Nissan has relatively modest plans for its new Titan pickup ? at least initially. When the automaker?s first full-size pickup goes on sale in early December, Nissan?s new Canton, Miss., assembly plant will have capacity to produce only about 100,000 Titans annually. And compared to Big Three competitors like the completely redesigned Ford F-150, Nissan will offer a relatively limited number of body, powertrain and bed configurations. But even though their pickup is months away from launch, the market buzz is growing and senior Nissan officials tell TheCarConnection they?re looking at a variety of options to expand both the Titan lineup and production capacity. It would be relatively easy to bump output up to at least 125,000, but anything beyond that will likely require an expansion of the Canton plant, which only went into operation a month ago. Other Titan variants under study include a heavy-duty, or three-quarter ton model, which would take on the likes of the Ford F-250 and Dodge Ram 2500. A tentative business plan is already waiting for the authorization of Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. One challenge, as previously reported by TCC is a shortage of engineering manpower. Though Nissan has been rapidly hiring new tech staffers, it is still struggling to support all the various product programs it has on tap for the next few years.
