Nintendo Wii Talk.

I guess we can all talk about it in this thread. I have a question. Looking at the graphics of all three consoles, do you think Wii will be able to compete a little bit in the graphics part? Is there any improvement graphics wise over gamecube?

I read somewhere that the Wii would have graphics ability slightly better than the Gamecube, but for the games that Nintendo make (cartoony games anyway) i think that'll be fine.

And i cant wait to see how Mario Kart works with the Wii controller 🙂

Screw mario kart I want to play Star Fox or Zelda with that controller....

Or actually Smash Bros with that controller.....*drool*

Wii looks like an overclocked gamecube. Bigger environments, slightly more complex character models, and more effects at once without slowdown, but you won't see anything that wasn't done on gamecube, it'll just be done better. Oh, better animation too. Anyhow, the Wii is still inferior to the xbox 1 in some ways, such as pixel shading ability. Would have been nice for nintendo to at least include an r300 class gpu and a dual core cpu. Or even just a dual core flipper and a dual core cpu, rather than just higher clocked versions of both alone.

What gpu is in the Wii?

what fox5 said

just looking at the early spec rumours and it doesnt look like it will hold a candle to the other two. i believe no HD output was in there somewhere. still theres no point in having all that power if you make ****** games.

basically i would of just overclocked the gamecube and called it a day lol. Gamecube has pretty awesome graphics as it is, so even if its a little better its not gonna look bad at all, specially on a a non-hd tv. hopefully the GPU in it is fully programmable. i believe the current Gamecube GPU had fixed function TnL? (correct me if im wrong)

PSA: For everyone making the joke about "OCing a Cube" ... the first "RevKits" actually were overclocked GameCubes. 😀

Edit - Also sig. 😀

Edit2 - While there's an audience here that isn't bothering to make penis jokes, consider this: Since the Wii is so similar on the hardware level to the Cube, development can start where it left off. So the learning curve for how to properly use the hardware - see "Luigi's Mansion" vs "Resident Evil 4" - will be all but gone.

It'll be interesting to see what happens around Christmas.

Personally, I'm betting that Nintendo cleans up. Sure, it may be nothing more than an overclocked GC with a nifty new control scheme, but it's price point is going to be so far under the other two, that it will sell to all the parents suffering PS3 sticker shock.

It has a higher clocked cpu and gpu of the ones that were in gamecube.
The cpu runs at 729Mhz instead of the 485mhz of the original cpu. The graphics chip is 243mhz up from the original's speed of 162mhz. It seems all nintendo did was a die shrink of their current cpu and gpu, though the cpu seems a bit low clocked even for just a simple die shrink, considering IBM has had similar cpus at twice the speed on 130nm and it's using 90nm.
Most likely, the console will be about equivalent to an early 2002 PC. Something like a Geforce 4 MX combined with a 1 to 1.5ghz cpu level of performance. I actually wouldn't be surprsied to see if final specs had a 1~ghz cpu and if the graphics chip turned out to have an additional texturing engine added on.

Yeah, it was more or less fixed function. Nope, Wii has no added shaders, so in that respect it's still less advanced than xbox 1 and may not even reach splinter cell's level of graphics.

Since the Wii is so similar on the hardware level to the Cube, development can start where it left off. So the learning curve for how to properly use the hardware - see "Luigi's Mansion" vs "Resident Evil 4" - will be all but gone.

Except it also took a lot more effort to make RE4's graphics, with the focus on graphics gone, who says the same effort will be put in there. Rebel Strike could be considered to look better than any of the Wii games shown so far.

well, you dont need pixel pipes to paly the best games. Oblivion aUT2007 can rot. All I need is my Mario series, mario kart, chrono trigger and f-zero. graphics are so overrated now. pretty game /= good game. look at Black...

I am buying this launch day just for Zelda. If there are some other good launch titles, I will go ahead and get those too.

Hopefully the launch price is $250-$300

Looks like I didnt need to keep my Gamecube after all.

that would have added to the cost though.. and i think the wii will try to be more appealing (price-wise) than the other two consoles.

I heard the GPU in the console will be based off R520 so it should be pretty decent. Normally I'm not the least bit excited about consoles but I look forward to picking up a Wii when it's released.

I always loved Sega and now as they have been killed off in the hardware area by Sony and Microsoft I must hope that Nintendo lives on. I would like someone to survive from the 80s era of video games.

I'm of the belief that the Wii will be the best of the 3 systems. In agreeance with mwmorph, graphics aren't everything. With the time saved by building a relatively simple system (in comparison to the ps3 and 360), more time is available to create genuinely better games with better concepts (ie. the controller, although I'm not entirely sold on it... YET).

Who knows, they put themselves in a great position to get a jumpstart on the other two for the next gen system (I guess that would actually be the NEXT, next gen system).

I bought a GC specifically for sunshine, prime, and windwaker. And likewise, I'll own a Wii for the franchises alone.

Exactly. I don't know what this talk is about a R300-class GPU, I thought it was R500-class. Probably not running as fast as the Xbox 360, since it has to fit in a small box and be really cheap. Personally I'm far more excited about a small, unique, $200 piece of hardware that can play the huge catalog of games that I missed than I am about either of the other two next-gen consoles. I probably will pick up a PS3 eventually, but only for Gran Turismo, FF, or some other killer exclusive deal.

Oh and I love Miyamoto games. Cartooniness FTW !!!!!!!! I see enough blood and guts in real life.

😛 j/k about the blood and guts.

The battle of the PS 3 vs the wii in the Japanese market will be interesting. The xbox 360 will probably never be a major player in Japan.

Wii should be in a completely different niche than PS3. I'm guessing most people in Japan will buy both, PS3 for graphics power and mind-aweing graphics, and a Wii for good times. Wii will be cheap anyway. I think nintendo might've caught onto something with this low-cost business.

I completely agree with you, and will probably follow the exact same gameplan.

oh, and I'm a firefighter/paramedic. I'm not joking about the blood and guts 😉

I think the name Wii is hilarious 🙂
My money is still on this system being #1.
I like it when a company focuses more on gameplay than graphics. Nothing has held my attention much in the past couple years.

I haven't seen any official core speed clocks. And also, you have to understand that clocks don't mean everything. Even though the possible 700+ mhz is close to an xbox, it's not a similar architecture. You can't compare it. You also can't compare a 2ghz AMD 64 to a 2ghz P4...the AMD 64 would own it, and I think this is a similar case with the Wii.

And yes, the GPU is based off the R520, but I dont think they've announced anything past that (pipelines, shaders, etc).

But from what I've heard, the graphics are pretty good. Xbox graphics or better...like, the Mario Galaxies, that had pretty good graphics...better than I expected.

For the price, and the gameplay (and the "cartoonish" games), I think this is a great system.

Graphics wise the Wii doesn't stand a chance against the other two- not that I see that as a particularly huge issue given where they are going.

Nin wants a low price of entry, easy availability and mass market appeal. They are going to focus on games, and with the considerably less powerful graphics processing and unique controller interface they should have some solid ground to stand on there.

I am expecting slightly better then XBox graphics with better filtering and AA running @480p. That isn't bad by any means, but no way are they going to be running with the 360 or PS3, not even close. They are going to go with a low cost option for their GPU and CPU to give them the highest yields out of the big three at the lowest price point. I see them targetting a completely different market while giving the old school enough of what they want to keep them happy(ie- Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc).

that one game with the sword fighting (not sure what it's called, but it was on E3) looks awsome with the Wii. As much as i thought the 360 and the PS3 were better, seeing games like these makes me want the Wii more!!!!
