The one socket is used for the headphones, for the GBA-GBA connection and also the GBA-Gamecube connection.
That's how it saves space. One socket for 3 different connections.
Actually there are two ports in the back. There is the old link port, and there is the new (similar sized/shaped, a tad bigger) port which is for the charger and headphones. Regardless, they're both shallow plugs, a headphone plug is very long and would not fit as I described in my previous post.
