Do these serve any real purpose outside of the Smash Brothers game? If so, what games do they work with? I'm having a hard time finding much about them other than vague bits of info that don't really say much except for one bit on wikipedia that mentions that they might add extra costumes for the characters in Mario Kart.

Nintendo plans on having them work with other games and some on the 3DS as well.
