More than 720,000 Wii systems sold in March, representing the highest monthly sales total outside of holiday months (November or December) to date, while Nintendo DS? also sold through nearly 700,000 systems.
Nintendo also finished with the top-selling U.S. game of March. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which launched March 9, came in at No. 1 with 2.7 million units sold.

"Nintendo systems represented 58 percent of all video game hardware sold in March in the United States," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We expect our momentum to continue with big upcoming game launches like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit."

Good god!

Cue typical Nintendo-fanboy comment: "They are just printing money!"

I'm happy for Nintendo, as long as their casual hardware and games don't influence the rest of the market.

I still haven't opened Metroid Prime 3, SSBB, and Zelda:TP yet. I played Mario Galaxy a little. Been playing Wii bowling and baseball (baseball opponents are fricking cheaters).

Been playing Starfox Command on DS again. What a great game. I bought Starfox 64 on VC on the Wii, haven't played it yet.

Oh man you've got some great gaming ahead of you! I really loved MP3.

Wow, those are insane numbers. I don't understand how the DS sells so well for so long, you'd think everyone would have one by now.

well if your family has kids old enough. then each one will want their own. its a lot easier to just get them one rather than force them to share a system.

everyone of my nephews and nieces has their own ds lite. that's about 9 right there.

I wish they would make some kind of patch so we can play MP1 & 2 with wiimote.

Wow. All the analysts were predicting that the PS3 would outsell the 360 in March. 360 just edged the PS3 out.

The Wii console numbers are just sick for this time of year. I have a feeling that we aren't going to have the typical summer doldrums when it comes to sales in the games industry.

It makes you wonder how many sales are being pushed due to what system the majority of a person's friends have. Let's be honest here, consoles have basically become an online machine but unlike the different variety of PCs you can't hook up with your friends if you're the only one with a PS3 out of the group.

Looks like MS has solved their supply problems. I don't feel too bad for Sony though, here are the NPD numbers from March 2007:

Wii - 259,000 ( + 462K :Q / +infinity )
Xbox 360 - 199,000 ( + 63K / + 31% )
PlayStation 3 - 130,000 ( + 127K / +97% )

The PS3 will probably stay in third place in the US, but it's winning over 360 in worldwide sales and is looking a lot less coffin-nails-in than last year.

Why is the PSP listed fourth?

I'm not so sure, there's likely to be a huge increase in sales with some of the games coming out this year and next (MGS4, GT5, FFXIII, and less so with games like Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, etc). I wouldn't be totally surprised if the PS3 manages to beat the 360 by the end of this generation...regardless, I think it will be very close.

MS reported a doubling of sales in Europe for March after the price drop there. The 360 can be competitive there and has a substantial lead in the US. The PS3 would have to start doing Wii numbers to catch up and pass the 360 within the next couple of years in North America.

Japan is just a lost cause. They still need to be there but I don't know what it will take for the Xbox to get a reasonable level of sales in that country. They said the original Xbox was too big, too black and didn't have any games that appealed to Japanese gamers. The 360 came out smaller in a popular iPodish color and has been pumping out highly rated games that you would think would appeal to Japanese gamers. No go.

For me, that did drive my decision somewhat. The number of good games available on 360 for $30 or less was the main factor though.

ditto that. I would like to see a few more good FPS's. Or more specifically, a Doom 2 remake 🙂 But it would be really nice to see an exclusive-ish title. It would just have to somehow set itself apart from everything else.

Sony's Spin:

* The Season of Monster Titles Has Begun: The April releases of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Grand Theft Auto IV kick off the waterfall of blockbusters coming to PS3 this year, including the exclusive titles Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2 and SOCOM: Confrontation to name a few. These mega hits combined with enthusiasm for Blu-ray promise to further drive PS3 sales throughout 2008.

PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) continued to boast strong sales with 297,011 PSP hardware units sold in March, up 22.1% over the previous month and representing a sales increase of 65% growth year-over-year. Sales were fueled by the of recent exclusive blockbuster releases of God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the two best-selling handheld games in the month of March.

CEO Perspective

"Our sales momentum continues to defy what is traditionally a sluggish sales month. PS3 continued the strong momentum with a year-over-year sales growth of over 98%. It is proof that, in these economically challenging times, consumers recognize the long-term value of our platforms and the tremendous heritage of our brand in delivering the best entertainment experience. PSP expanded the portable market with more than 297,011 in hardware sales this month, driven by the monster releases of the two best-selling handheld games in March, God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. This further proves the trend that 2008 is the year for PlayStation."

- Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America

Sales of the PS3 were so abysmal at this time last year I'm still not sure the "sales up nearly 100% year-over-year" line is meaningful. It will be interesting to see how much of a boost PS3 sales get over the coming months with the big releases though.

MS's Spin:

Consumers continue to make the ultimate vote for Xbox 360 as the console of choice by investing $9.4 billion to date this lifecycle in the Xbox 360 experience, far outpacing that of other game consoles. (March NPD data)

Going into March, some key U.S. retailers were still experiencing the trickle down effect of Xbox 360 console shortages. By the end of March, supply issues had improved and we expect retailers to be fully stocked with Xbox 360 consoles in time for the "Grand Theft Auto IV" launch. According to NPD, 262,000 Xbox 360 consoles sold in March, reclaiming the #2 position in the next-gen console category.

In just two weeks, Xbox 360 will extend its industry lead with the year's most anticipated game launch, GTA IV. Launching April 29, GTA IV will be coming to Xbox 360 on day one. GTA IV will feature the first ever online multiplayer for the franchise and Xbox 360 is also the only place you can earn GTA IV Achievements and increase your gamerscore.

Starting this fall, only Xbox 360 owners will have access to exclusive GTA IV episodic content. Whether it's the results of online polls or data from pre-sells, consumers have made it clear that the benefits of Xbox LIVE and exclusive access to GTA IV episodic content are making Xbox 360 the chosen place to play GTA IV.

Xbox 360 drives industry growth with record attach rates

· March NPD data shows a new U.S. Xbox 360 software attach rate of 7.5, a record for any game console.

· In Europe, Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8; Wii 3.5) after 27 months on the market..

· Xbox 360 sales in Europe have more than doubled in the wake of recent retail price changes, solidifying its leadership position as the number one next-generation console in EMEA, owning 42% of the market in terms of life-to-date revenue. (Microsoft estimates based on ChartTrack and Gfk data).

· Third party publishers find more success on Xbox 360. In March, Xbox 360 accounted for $220 million of all third party game sales this generation, or 49 percent of share. Third party publishers win on Xbox 360 more than any other platform. (March NPD data)

· Games for the Xbox 360 platform accounted for four of the top ten games for this generation. (March NPD data)

Xbox 360 most widely used system for online gaming

· Xbox 360 delivers social entertainment experiences to more than 10 million Xbox LIVE gamers around the globe. (Microsoft internal data)

· On April 2, NPD released a study called "Online Gaming 2008" which reported that 42 percent of people aged six to 44 play video games online. Their console of choice? Xbox 360. Half of online gamers prefer the Xbox 360 over other current-generation gaming consoles. ("Online Gaming 2008")

· Xbox LIVE now delivers 4,800 hours of TV and movie entertainment including family favorites like "Hannah Montana," "Lost," and "Superman III."(Microsoft internal data)

Xbox 360 is the gaming platform of choice?our great games and exploding online community will help keep it that way.

Superman III is a family favorite? WTF! Superman III gets a pass from being the worst of the Superman films only because Superman IV was even worse. Yeesh.

Anyways, very impressive attach rate still. It'll be fun to see who gets the bigger boost from GTA IV since both the Sony and MS camps are putting so much hype behind it.
