I read a statement from ATI that they are going to work closely with Nintendo on future technologies. While many sites report that it is obvious that they are made an agreement regarding next generation gamecube I suspect that the agreement concerns the successor to gameboy advanced. That?s what I am hopping because since the upcoming generation is going to be probably the last generation that is strictly polygon based it would be great for Silicon Graphics (SGI) to provide the technology behind Gamecube next.It make great sense for SGI since it is their last chance probably to benefit from the game market.I really don?t know about the technology assets and the Graphics patent SGI has and when they expire but since the graphics model will start slowly to focus away (from next next generation and beyond) from the model SGI established back in the early nineties it is now a good time to take advantage of their technology and make money based on the contract with Nintendo and also because this agreement will boost greatly their sales of SGI workstation & supercomputers.
If you look their past achievement in the game market (the Graphics chip inside Nintendo 64) it was a superb chip in relation with the Graphics chips of Playstation (a simple polygoniser) and Saturn (2D design), offering a lot of quality features that they are not present even on Playstation 2.
Sure anyone having seen the quality of SGI 3D graphics it will be stupendous to focus only on papergraphics(PS2 for example 66 million polygons per second 2560bit GPU etc.). It will be a great console for sure. SGI & Nintendo pay attention.
