I've noticed that some routers simply do not work with the Nintendo DS and I don't understand why. As far as I know, it uses 802.11B and supports WEP (not WPA though) so theoretically it should work with any router that supports 802.11B and is using WEP.

Nintendo has a list of routers that are tested to be compatible or incompatible, so it's not just me not having the right settings. Some routers I've tried work flawlessly, some don't use DHCP properly but manually entering settings work and some just don't work at all.

So does anyone know why some routers would have problems and some not work at all with the Nintendo DS?

I do not think that the Nintendo DS WIFI is a standard WIFI.

As far as I know it is a propriety concoction.

It must use some standards as it works with many off the shelf routers that were available before the Nintendo DS was out. As far as I know, no router is designed for compatibility with the DS.

By definition, Standard means that it works with every thing that is within the Standard. If it is Not working with every thing that is 802.11b compatible, it means that when it was built the builder made some shortcuts that do not comply with the Standard.

They probably initially built the Gamebox in a way that would force users to buy the Nintendo device. If it was pure Standard, any 801.11b client device should work with it.
