It's no secret that the Nintendo Wii lags behind the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 graphically. This has led some analysts to speculate that a 'Wii HD' or similar successor to the Wii is on the horizon. In a video interview with Gamespot at the Nintendo Summit, Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway squashes the idea of a new Nintendo console any time soon.
Dunaway says that the it's too early for a new console from Nintendo because the Wii still has a lot of room to grow. The install base of the Nintendo Wii is 27 million plus worldwide which is more than the PS2 had at the same point in its lifecycle. "There's still a big audience that we can access with the Wii," claims Dunaway.
The Wii graphics lag doesn't seem to bother Dunaway as she says that Nintendo is about creating immersive experiences that consumers can enjoy. "That being said, part of Nintendo's heritage is to always be looking at innovation and to start working on the next hardware as soon as we launch a platform, so we'll have it ready when we think the time is right."
