It's... odd that they've decided to draw the line in the sand here. This and the Lets Play fiasco. Usually a sign of a company beginning to become unstable.
 
No, I just think Nintendo always demands too much control over things. It's what really hurt their 3rd party relations.
 
Nintendo is weird in some ways. For whatever reason they don't really like having their stuff streamed. But they are one of the few publishers that are ok with fan made games/stuff as long as the person who made it isn't selling it or making money.

Well, to be fair, Evo is pretty damned tiny in terms of a competition. One weekend in one city, kind of miniscule in the gaming world at large. I asked a buddy who plays a ton of SF games if he ever thought about going, and he was like 'what's that?'.

It's a start though, a real competition should be something where there's an actual massive tour, roll through the biggest cities in the country scooping up the best in each area, then have them duke it out after a massive hype buildup.

Taking that thought further, rolling together a bunch of types over a couple of weekends into a world gaming Olympics would be awesome + TV broadcast for the finals. Get all the big stuff like CoD, Madden, Forza, SF, etc, etc. Have top prizes of $1M for the big games, and $100k-$500k for the lesser ones. I guarantee that the combination of marketing revenue and entry revenue would make it massively profitable, and the increased sales of the titles would be epic.

Do you know about MLG league? That is huge compared to evo and still many people do not know what it is. It is just fact, not a troll post. Evo is very, very niche. Even if you follow it and even if 10 people here follow it...it is relatively unknown among the general gaming population. Even avid fighting game fans may not know of it unless they browse certain forums.

No, he's not. EVO last year had over 1500 entrants for just a single game. Exactly how many tournaments can you name with that much participation? Dreamhack had SF4 and it was a joke.

They would miss the chance for FREE exposure and could possibly build hype for their new SSB. WiiU has been selling poorly right? Imagine if the Smash community (who raised $90k+ just to be in this tournament) would get behind it?

The idea that EVO is a tiny tournament in the "gaming world at large" is a joke and a troll. Nobody who plays competitive fighters competitively hasn't heard of EVO.

Sorry, but it is small in the gaming world at large. Even though EVO is THE GIANT in the fighting game community, it is still for a niche genre (like it or not fighting games have become a niche genre).

Whatever you say man. Trolls. I'm pretty sure some are just arguing to argue. You can believe what you want. EVO is the de-facto fighting game tournament, always has been and always will be. MLG actually has less viewers both in person and online than does EVO (based on twitch stats) and EVO is a one time event with prizes exceeding 30k IIRC. It draws players from ALL OVER the world, and they all gather yearly in Las Vegas by an event created by the Cannon brothers (I know them) - this tournament has been run on a yearly basis for over a decade now.

If you're clueless, by all means, continue thinking it's a niche. MLG is for other types of games. They won't touch fighting games because EVO is the de facto tournament for fighting games, period. Does MLG do Injustice? No. SF4AE? No. MvC? No. Evo is the standard for fighting games, the biggest in the world with the biggest prizes, biggest attendance, and most online viewership. Last years event had 300k simultaneous viewers from all over the world watching the stream. MLG does not even approach that with their nonstop incessant SC2 reruns. In fact, I went to a MLG event In Raleigh, NC a couple of years back and I was shocked. Because the venue was empty in comparison to what I expected. It was pathetic and poorly run. I'm not saying MLG isn't big, but it is for different genres. They don't do fighting games.

I won't bait the trolling anymore, or the arguing just for arguing sake. Any tournament-minded fighting game aficionado knows about EVO. If you're completely freakin' clueless on the fighting game tournament scene, maybe you think it's a niche. All of the SF4AE tournament players know about EVO. All of the biggest names in fighting game tournaments know about Evo. Chris G., Justin Wong, Fuudo, infiltration, these are the top players in the world. Ask THEM if they think EVO is a niche.

I know EVO is big, in the fighting world. But the fighting genre as a whole is a niche genre. When you cater to a niche genre only, even if you are the biggest tournament there is for it, you are still niche. It really is that simple. There is nothing wrong with being niche, hell it is better if things stay niche if history has taught us anything because as soon as shit gets mainstream it gets watered down for the masses.

Game tournaments are a niche. Again, please name the larger tournaments. It is not like EVO is barely breaking the top 50.

Then stop arguing for arguing sake. It's the biggest event for fighting games. PERIOD. The best players for fighting games all know about EVO. No offense, but you're completely oblivious to fighting games and the associated tournament scene. Stop pretending that you're aware of what the deal is here, EVO is a big deal to anyone invested in the genre.

Now you're just sounding ridiculous for arguing about semantics about what constitutes a niche - you seem to be saying EVO is a niche just because it is ONLY fighting games. By that definition, I can say the same about MLG because it is only garbage like COD, LOL and SC2. Which, strangely enough -- MLG has less viewers and less subs online than EVO does. The one time EVO event is more profitable than any 1 time MLG event. Hell, most people don't even attend MLG events any longer, the venues are empty (at least the ones i've passed by).

But, it is not. There are a few larger, but for the most part, it is one of the largest. I would say easily in the top 10. EVO 2012 had around 1700 entrants for SF4. What other tournament had that amount of entrants for a single game? It also has over 100,000 viewers watching the main stream.

There are few tournaments that get that kind of turnout / viewership. Yes, there are more, but none of those feature SSB. MLG had it for awhile and EVO had SSBM in 07, in 08 SSBB pretty much killed off the entire competitive community.

The fact was Nintendo had a huge opportunity to showcase and generate hype for their game. They decided against it and after the backlash, will allow it.

yes, fighting is a inche genre, but you said your friend who plays A LOT of SF and in tournaments said he had no clue what Evo is. i find that VERY hard to believe.

but if it is true, then just because your clueless friend has never heard of it doesn't mean it isn't huge. it's the biggest fighting game torney BY FAR and people come from all over the world to compete in it. i believe last year the stream hit over 100k viewers. how many viewers do these tournaments that your buddy plays in get?

and btw, i'm not in vegas right now at the cosmo lol. not going to be attending evo though.

Give me a freakin break man. If you want to argue semantics then every tournament is a niche. EVO is THE tournament for fighting games with the largest prizes, attendance, and viewership by a mile. Also, no single MLG event has ever had 4.7 million concurrent viewers on stream. Twitch keeps count of this and generally speaking the SC2 events get about 40-50k simultaneous, that's it. EVO easily exceeds that in terms of concurrent viewers - MLG is also NA based while EVO is worldwide. There are viewers from Japan, Europe, everywhere. It isn't only NA based as is MLG.

As for Kaotik's friend who plays SF. Give me a break. You're either being disingenuous or your friend is completely oblivious and not a tournament minded player. If he wants to play with the EVO crew, leave his Xbox 360 tag here. Should be easy enough to figure out his caliber and whether he is clueless.

Anyone who is a tournament minded fighting game player and says that EVO is a niche is either clueless or trolling, period. It is THE one event, and to say it's a niche well, that is stupid. We can argue semantics about how MLG is a "niche" too. I mean their concurrent twitch viewership isn't THAT great and their in-person viewership is very low at various venues. But i'm not saying MLG is small. I'm saying you're ridiculous for arguing semantics over a niche - there is no fighting game player who is tournament minded that would call EVO a niche.
