Nintendo addressing its strategy

Don't worry guys, they are explorering the idea of wallpapers on smartphones.......
I wish I was making that up

Good. Marketing is their main problem. The machine has a far more compelling library of both current and announced titles than the ps4 and xbone, it's just that people don't know that.

i literally stopped reading after this.

What’s Mr. Iwata going to focus on for the next 10 years? The main theme: enhancing the quality of life through entertainment. The key word is health, Mr. Iwata says. Citing a flood of wearable devices already on the market, he says Nintendo is trying out something completely new: non-wearables to monitor your health.

looks like the nintendo i once used to care about simply is no more.

On the compelling scale of 1-10, with 10 be highest. It's Wii U 4 and PS4/XB1 2. Not what I would call anything special across the board.

IGN looked at the sales for all of Nintendo's systems and games.
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/01/29/these-are-nintendos-lifetime-hardware-and-software-numbers

I would argue the attach rate is the more important number, as it's the average number of games sold per console. Or roughly speaking, how dedicated owners are to their system. The Wii U's isn't bad at about 5. Better than the 3DS, but still lower than their other TV top consoles.

By comparison, the PS4's attach rate is 2.3 games per console sold (9.7 million games have been sold). PS3 and 360 have an attach rate of 9.8 and 10.8 respectively, which is higher than all Nintendo consoles except the GameCube.

It's important to keep in mind that the PS4 and Xbone have only been on the market for two months. What matters is how they'll compare a year from now to what the Wii U is today.

Nintendo talked a lot about the hardware but I really think their online services need the bigger boost. Speaking as a 3DS owner, it's still clunky. The store isn't well laid out, content seems sparse. It would be awesome if they had something like PS+. Offer up a free digital Wii or older Wii U game every month for Wii U. DS games on the 3DS.

What is interesting is the Wii attach rate...which so many next gen band wagoneers on this site have said Wii sold no games. I'd say they were very very wrong. Even if you remove Wii Sports, they are left with over 800million game sales.

A bit disappointed that the new Zelda game and even Mario is being outsold by Pokemon by so much. Sad.

to be fair, the wii attach rate is also skewed because it had bundles with many of the top selling games in there, which skews the attach rate and total game sales. there were bundles that came with nsmb, wii sports, wii sports resort, mario kart, and variations of those that included 2 games.

Yes (which I pointed out about Wii Sports), but so did the other consoles.

not their entire lifespan they didn't. "real" bundles with the other consoles were holiday bundles or limited bundles for the most part, until well into the consoles life span. wii always came with a pack-in game, so that is immediately at least 100 million games "sold" according to numbers. that's more than 1/9th of their total games sales, and as mentioned, many bundles came with more than 1 game.

and the vibe i got when people say "wii sells no games" was more along the lines of wii sells not many "core" games, with the exception of first party games. i mean take a look at the list of top sellers. its basically wii fit with a bunch of packins, and then the bottom 2 games. i also don't think many people question that nintendo sells A LOT of their first part games.

and by "core" (i hate that term, hardcore, whatever), i mean non first party and non-party games.

I don't know anymore,...

The Wii was a disappointment for me. There are only 2 games on it, that I consider worth playing; Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. Everything else was awful for me.

The Wii U has been pretty great. And, I look forward to Nintendo IPs,.. but, that is about it. I don't really care about anything else, like 3rd party games.

I don't see them getting out of this anytime soon.

On the plus side, the 3DS is doing great. Tons of great games. I am thinking they might as well just go "pure" handheld, with the option of hooking it up to a TV or somethingthing, if you want to play the games at home.

im talking about wii u being more compelling than the x1 and ps4.

I think he's talking about games in the marketplace right now vs. the future.

The PS4/XB1 should get TONS of games, but it remains sadly true that the games on there now are mostly borderline shovelware rehash crap to average meh fare. Only the indies and Killer Instinct are really much different than stuff that's already out our ears on PS3/360, even more so on the sad 32" 768p TVs that a lot of people still use.

If you have me the entire library for PS4, XB1, or WiiU TODAY, and told me that's ALL I could play for the rest of my life, it'd be WiiU by 50 miles.

Now ask that question in Q4 2014? Probably the other way around 🙂

oh ok i see now.

in that case i'd probably put the wii u at 0 and ps4 at about 4, and the x1 at about 6.

but i'm not new to consoles and this is pretty much the same type of launch we've seen since the n64 as far as game variety and "newness" goes. so i'm not concerned at all.

Focus on health? I didn't even catch that part but I skimmed through. I don't need or want anything monitoring my health. If I feel that something is wrong I go to my doctor. Other than that I just do my normal thing.

Nintendo needs to realize they have a massive misunderstanding of the industry as it exists today. They need a competent network strategy yesterday. They need a new HD zelda title yesterday. They need a new HD Metroid game (not Other M type stuff) yesterday. They need a new 3D mario yesterday/ They need these things(and they need it done ASAP!!!) because otherwise there is a whole ton of people who simply refuse to buy into their new console. More and more people will buy an XB1 and/or a PS4 and think they have enough game systems to last them a long time and they won't even bat an eye at the WiiU at that point. Party games are well and good but that simply isn't how the world plays games anymore. It is far more convenient to hop online and see who is playing what on your friend list and go from there. Very few people do the local thing anymore by comparison.

IMO, the Wii U has a much better library now and lined up. The thing is though, I only care about the first party games. I don't really have much need for any third party games, since they would be multiplatform and I would just get them on PC.

The PS4 and XBOne have nothing to offer to me right now. Their best games are probably Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed, which is would just buy on the PC. Their best upcoming games are probably Watchdog or something similar, which I would just buy on PC. I think that will change in the future with the PS4 once the inevitable console-only Japanese games come out, but I doubt I'll ever get an XBOne unless a surprise comes in the future.

I realize I'm different than most. PC is my primary gaming platform, which takes the place of a PS4 or XBone of a 'normal' gamer. That said, I still think the Wii U is a great companion console. It offers another sphere or take on games, where as PS4+XBone would have too much overlap with each other. This is especially true if you care about couch co-op, or are tired of the FPS/3rdPS inundation.

I think the Wii U's main problem is marketing. Where are the "Would U like to play?" commercials, or some equivalent? Hopefully they can get that figured out. Although it doesn't matter too much to me, since I basically buy only first part games and that would get made regardless.

The most important thing is to remember that the Wii U doesn't have to sell more than the PS4 or XBone to be successful. It isn't in the same race or targeting the same market necessarily. It just has to sell enough + enough games to make Nintendo a healthy profit, which it has failed to do thus far.

What about all the exclusives that never come to PC and aren't made by Nintendo? You can ignore them as if they don't exist? I don't believe that myself. I mean there's a ton of studios making games for both the XB1 and PS4 and we've seen some of them. There's quite a lot of them that aren't shooters either. Many of them will never appear on PC and Nintendo won't get them either. I know what you're saying, but if I had to guess I'd say there was more people eyeing the upcoming PS4 and XB1 titles than WiiU. Part of that is the hype of the new systems but a lot of it is past experience with Sony and MS systems and developer studios.
