Nintendo 3DS $249.99

$249.99 and the release date is March 27, while Europeans will get it a few days earlier, on March 25. European pricing, however, will be decided by retailers, which leaves us feeling a little bit unfulfilled. It looks like £229.99 is the going rate in the UK, while Europe is looking at €249.99.

Launch Games are 30+ including:

Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D
Dead or Alive Dimensions
Rabbids 3D
Resident Evil: Revelations
Paper Mario
Madden game

Engadget Hands-On:

Listening to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime's talking points today, we couldn't help but think we were caught smack dab in between its two target demographics: schoolchildren and nostalgic parents. In some ways that feels analogous to 3DS as a device. It, too, is caught between two sides of the technological spectrum. On one end, the device is burdened by a resistive screen and its dependency on a stylus -- hard to stomach in a world where it's just as easy to take a smartphone from our pockets and thumb a few rounds of whathaveyou while sitting on a train or in the back of a car. On the other end, its parallax 3D display is pushing boundaries not yet optimized for consumer use, with a trick that's only effective under very strict conditions.

Make no mistake, the 3DS is a strong evolutionary step in the right direction and its catalog of titles already looking strong from the get-go -- taken as a 2D device, it's hands-down a very compelling piece. Is Nintendo pushing the 3D thing too hard? We can't wait to get some quality time on a review unit and really find out.

$250 launching on March 27th. I think that's about as good a price as we could hope for based on the Japanese price.

The thing that has always helped the Gameboy line has been the price. I'm not sure there are a lot of parents that will be willing to plop down $250 for something that's going to be tossed around by junior.

Yeah, I know several that were reticent to put down money for the price of a DSi (including me). This is launching at almost $100 more.

Part of the appeal of the DS for families with multiple kids was that they could buy multiple DS handhelds. I can't see that happening with the 3DS at that price.

Especially when you can get an iPod Touch for cheaper.

As a parent of two small boys, there is no way I'm giving my 4 or 7 year old a $250 handheld gaming system. Heck, I'm cautious about letting my 7 year old borrow my DS Lite on occasion.

True. Also, people like me will not be spending that much for a handheld. For that much, I'd buy a 2nd PS3 or a 360.

30 games at launch! I'm impressed.

I thought they said there will be 30 games released between March 27 and E3 2011 (June 7), not 30 games at launch.

Yeah, too high, I won't be buying it at launch, although I'm not really that interested in handhelds that much to begin with.

But they know what theyre doing. Every time they launch a system, it's impossible to find for months, with demand outstripping supply. The higher price will probably bring them more in line, and there will be the inevitable refresh 1-2 years later, and the price can only come down.

Do we seriously need another thread on this??? Everyone
knows they would be $200+. There are 3 other 3ds threads here. Why not just update one of those?

Not that I'm saying it's a price point that's going to be embraced by consumers, the 3DS pricing isn't without precedent. Remember, the PSP debuted at in the US at $249.

Personally, I'm on the fence about launch day, but I could see myself getting one not too long thereafter pending some well-reviewed titles.

Between the price and the battery life, I'm completely turned off. 3D isn't worth the investment on the big screen or the small screen. I'll have to wait for Nintendo to introduce a 3DS Lite at a lower price before I even seriously consider the thing.

At least in the US, the PSP was a flop. Even when it was brought down to sub-$200 prices, Western developers bailed on the system.

The Sony PSP isn't really a flop. It's by far the most successful gaming handheld not designed by Nintendo. (And not desgined to be a phone...) Western developers aren't paying that much attention to the Nintendo DS either, so that doesn't mean much.
