Two sources close to the San Francisco 49ers told SportsLine.com on Wednesday that the club has fired Dennis Erickson as its head coach.

The move ends two turbulent seasons for Erickson -- who was 9-23 with the club -- including a franchise worst 2-14 this season -- and was anticipated for weeks. Owner John York asked Erickson to fire some of his assistants, and when the head coach balked, speculation centered on Erickson's dismissal.

The club is expected to make an announcement later Wednesday.

Erickson was hired in 2003 to replace Steve Mariucci, fired after the 49ers reached the playoffs the previous two seasons.

Hope they fire Donahue too. and get rid of York heheh.

edit:
San Francisco 49ers coach Dennis Erickson and general manager Terry Donahue will be fired, sources told the Chronicle today. A news conference is expected at 2:30 p.m. CBS Sportsline reported the Erickson has already been informed.

Mike Holmgren? I would be really surprised if they get him. Hopefully just get him as a coach and not a coach/GM.

Oops 😱 😀

USC could be a legendary offensive team next year if they can get most of them to stay, but you don't stay when you can be the first pick in the draft.

I wonder if that means they'll get Pete Caroll and if that will convince Leinert to declare.

going after Pete Carroll is not the right move for the Niners. They need someone that has actually won in the NFL before. Not another college coach that failed in the NFL.

Why would they want Pete Caroll? He failed miserably as an NFL coach twice (w/ the Jets and Patriots). He's really more cut out for the college ranks, as is Dennis Erickson.

And the 9ers have already stated they aren't neccessarily interested in Leinert even if he does come out. And I agree, drafting yet another iffy college QB is not their answer. They need a lot of help elsewhere before even considering the QB position.

I don't think Leinert is an iffy college QB. But the niners do need help everywhere and most importantly the O-line. I think if you put any good QB behind the niner's line you'll get an injured QB real fast. The should trade down and try to get two linemen in the first round.

How many 'sure thing' college QBs end up being a bust? 90%? My point is EVERY college QB is iffy and shouldn't be looked at as the solution to a larger problem.

Their biggest problem is there is no marquee player(s) coming out this year, so there's not going to be anyone willing to give up much to trade up to the #1 pick. Their best hope would be to trade down to around the 10th spot somewhere and pick up an extra 2nd round pick or something. They really aren't going to get a lot of offers for it I don't think.

Wow looks like York axed Terry Donahue too.
I'm happy to see Donahue go. He's made some bad draft choices and personnel moves.
SF Chronicle

Looks like York is gonna eat 7.5+5=$12.5 Million + however much to sign new people.

But he'll still charge his players and employees 37 cents a stamp

good to hear...

hard watching football this season when my team did so horribly 🙁

Hopefully next year will look nicer, it is almost impossible for it not to 😛

Erickson really never had a chance to succeed with York & the 49ers getting rid of all thier players. TO left for Eagles, Garcia left to Browns. Knapp left & became OC of Falcons, and Jim Mora (former DC) left to become HC of Falcons.

what's the draft order in the NFL ? Worst team = 1st pick ? Or is there some lottery to prevent teams from finishing last purposely ?
