U.S. Soldier Killed in Iraq Clash

The Associated Press
Thursday, May 29, 2003; 3:15 AM

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. soldier was killed by hostile fire Thursday while traveling on a main supply route in Iraq, a military statement said.

The brief statement released by the U.S. Central Command said the soldier was evacuated to 21st Combat Support Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It gave no further details or the soldier's name.

The announcement comes after a sharp escalation in clashes between Iraqis and U.S. troops in recent days.

The latest death brings to nine the number of American soldiers who have died around the country this week. Nearly two dozen others have been wounded.

Thankfully they were defending our freedom. Thank goodness because Saddam and his eight 50 year old tanks almost had us beat.

That was a close one, I feel safer already.

[sarcasm]I was so scared that Saddam was going to take over the world and take over my FREEDOM. Thanks to Bush and his super patriots we will now live free from the Baathists. I'm also real excited about all the oil this country is going to receive that I'll end up paying 2.00 per gal because our great corporations shut down refineries and make up the excuse that they are being serviced. I love getting screwed by everyone. God bless America. [/sarcasm]

In going over the responses on this thread, it seems that some have no concept of what being in a War Zone is all about.

1) The open 'Set-Piece' battles are over, there was no equipment that could resist our assault - this was known going in.
2) The second phase 'Guerilla Activity' will contine indefinately, always has & always will. (The Underground Resistance)
3) The 'Occupational Phase' will blend into and not be distinguishable from the 'Guerilla Activity' as long as we are there.
4) The 'Peace Keeping' phase may surplace the 'Occupational Phase' given time. (50 years later we're still in Korea)

Only the Marines have been withdrawn, their 'Excursionary Forces' which were there for the assault & set-piece battles
has concluded, their mission has been accomplished, they return for preparation for any next opponent.
Naval forces are no longer needed in the area as set piece & assault have concluded.

147,000+ remain in country, with additional forces being deployed. The Army is now engaged in a Post-Assault
Policing activity that will continue for most likely 18 months to two years. This is the part that normaly would have
fallen under the NATO Forces mission, if the U.S. had gotten a real coalition with the UN, instead of a stack of
Puppets with their hands out for cash awards.

War isn't over

By the way, Viet Nam had no classic 'Set-Piece' battles, tanks don't work well in 3 foot deep mud & rice paddies.
The course of 'Nam was guerilla warfare with the general population being the popular Army.
Vietnamese Regular Army came from the North - with Chinese command and Russian advisers.
No aircraft, tanks, and limited artilliary - but tons of hidden troops.

Yeah they are really dying for you and me... Iraq sent its aircraft carriers and set up launching points for the invasion and occupation of the USA in neighboring countries and planned to topple the US gov't and install one that fits their ideology. Those brave heros were protecting the USA and everyone in it from foreign occupation. Oh wait, it was the other way around. They died as invaders and for Bush's poor foreign policy and ego, not for the rights and freedoms of Americans. If you think otherwise, quick sucking on the propaganda juice and take a nice big dose of reality.

If it wasn't for their sacrifice, we would all be speaking Arabic now, or something like that.

That's a joke, right? If not I don't understand why we would be speaking Arabic now?

Many of you sound like this is another reason to blame someone other than the terrorist that attacked them. These soldiers all know how dangerous their job is and all chose to do it. I sometimes get the feeling from some posters that seeing brave American soldiers die at the hands of these terrorist give credibility to their thinking. How can any American feel good about our own sons and daughters dying? These are our neighbors, our friends, our children, and our parents. If you hate Americans, you must hate America. I do acknowledge that there are non-Americans on this forum, but most of the anti-American support is from Americans. As of today, there is still no law prohibiting you from getting out of this country.

Frankly I don't see any 'finger pointing' going on in this thread, just some sarcastic criticisim at best? I for one believe that each and every American soldier understands how dangerous their job is, I don't see anybody disputing that either. I also don't see anybody proclaiming that they hate Americans, or any "anti-American" support in this particular thread.

Loosing your life while performing duties for you country is to most of us, the ultimate sacrifice.....that is to be respected. Questioning the reasons that ultimately led to those individuals deaths is 'not' anti-American or 'un-patriotic' IMO, even if it is presented in a sarcastic way.
