was there ever a driver , experimental or otherwise for Win9x to use a 9-pin
mono monitor..

i have a couple of the ambers that were working great last time i used them
10 years ago.

pros: they are small and light and flat
they are bad for the environment i hate to just toss them

even partial support for them under win95 or win98 is somethin i would like to
experiemnt with but i have no idea how to make it work.
 
Your main problem isn't going to be the driver, you need a videocard that produces the required video signal. This used to be DIGITAL, TTL-level signalling, something your average VGA card can't even do electrically.
And THEN you're going to need an ISA slot to plug it into, and THEN you're going to ask for drivers. (You can check first ... does W9x still list a "Hercules Monochrome" display driver?)

Many current OSes can still run a monochrome text screen as the primary display, and run a PCI/AGP/PCIE VGA as secondary. Having a separate text console screen is handy e.g. for Linux. But still, you'll need an older mainboard that features an ISA slot.

i have a couple ISa mono cards but the only machine thos will work in is an early ATX or AT

i was thinking the last WINblows to feature mono was like v2.0 or v3.0
 
i have a 350 mhz board that will use ISA..just wish it had 3 ISA slots as i have an isa soundcard and an isa modem both which have reasons to keep..but cards slide in an out easy enough.
 
would my 350mhz run any windows apps under monochrome Linux then? like say a windows voicemail program..
i know linux has some Windows emulator type options available.
 
Why would you want to run Windows apps in Linux? Voicemail should be something that can be covered with native Linux software.

Besides, current Linux graphics interface (x.org) doesn't have drivers for monochrome graphics anymore either. You'd have to run native text mode, or graphics in "framebuffer mode", if there is such a driver for mono adapters.

Time to do some research, dude 🙂
