What's special about this camera? Isn't it just one of those super zoom cameras that have been flooding the market for manay years?

Agreed. The only 'really' innovative digicam to come out in years is the Casio EX-F1

Too bad it's super expensive.

that's why i never got a new one to replace my fz20.

it seems like all that segment of the market cares about now is having the most megapixels without regards to image quality (seems like they've been getting noisier) and having the biggest zoom range. it's just all marketable numbers now. the funny thing is that most of the 18x cameras don't realistically have much more zoom range than my old fz20. they just play with the bottom number of the ratio to make it look bigger than it is so it will wow joe blow. for example, this one at 18x has 27-486mm compared to my 12x fz20 at 36-432mm. whooptie freakin' doo. not exactly the huge increase one would expect for going to 18x from 12x.

why didn't they just try to make it down to 24-486mm so they could claim "20x super-mega-uber zoom!!!"

Will be interesting to see how they stack up irl, Nikon has surely got to get the P&S game right one day!

in 60 years they haven't, so, maybe, but i won't hold my breath.

Google "Coolpix 990 awards".

about the most innovative p&s since the olympus xa, but nikon basically abandoned everything that made that camera neat and just went with more and more me-too crud to compete with canony

27 is much wider than 36.
frankly, i'd rather have a 12x 27-324 than a 12x 36-432.

The difference between 432mm and 486mm on the telephoto end is not very noticeable. However, as ElFenix mentioned, the difference between 27mm and 36mm on the wide angle end is huge. As another example, I created a temporary gallery with 36mm, 27mm, and 23.8mm (tossed in just because I happen to have it) photos so you can see the difference in pictures larger than the thumbnail sized shots on that DPReview link.

definitely true :)
however, i think there has only been one instance (a waterfall which i was at the bottom of and couldn't step back from any more than i already did) in which i wished i could have gone wider. most p&s users probably wouldn't even notice it's not there. i think it's pretty much used to fudge the marketing numbers and "wow" the average consumer.

my solution to not having a WA lens on my S3IS is to take 2 or more shots and stitch them into a WA shot later on

ARGHGHGHG!!!! I was going to buy my daughter an S5 TODAY... now I wonder if I should wait. The S5 does have the movable/rotatable viewscreen (very handy) and the shotshoe, but if image quality is better on either the Nikon or the mentioned Olympus, then I suppose I should disappoint her and make her wait a little longer.

Hmmmm.....
