Hi folks,

I am moving into the world of SLR's.. I am giving up my Canon Pro 1 and thinking of buying either Nikon D100 or Nikon D70s. Can someone please tell me which one is better and why? Perhaps someone who has used them before.

Thanks,
Leo

The D70s by a mile. The D100 is a three year old digital SLR, and Nikon has made a lot of improvements since then.

Anyway, here is a comparison chart between the D70 and the D100. The D70s has a few small improvements, but is almost identical to the original D70.

Digital Rebel XT! I'm buying one soon ...

Haha, since you're on Nikon cameras, I would definitely go with the D70.

I hope I can get these last few dollars soon! School is over on Thursday for me and I'm going up north to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California for 4th of July weekend ...

I want the camera by then. Then photographic journies over the rest of the summer! :p

Well when i was choosing between the D70 and the DReb i went D70 for a few reasons.

1) The DReb felt cheap, almost like a plastic toy. The D70 felt much more substantial and more "professional"
2) The layout of the buttons on the D70 was much more pleasing and user friendly for me. The dual dials, info LCD on top, everything was right where i liked it.
3) The 18-70 kit lens on the D70 was substantially better than the 18-55 kit lens on the DReb. For instance the 18-70 ED that comes with the Nikon sells for around $300-$400 on its own, the 18-55 w/ the DReb sells for i believe around $150 or so.

That being said i LOVE my D70. Best purchase i've ever made.

two months ago, i asked myself the same question.

xt or d70.

and i went with xt, only because i like canon's high-end lens over nikon's high-ends.

if you're not planning on getting additional lens, get d70. it's a better built camera with better kit lens.

xt's kit lens doesn't do justice to the body.

currently, i'm in a market for a canon l lens. it definately makes up for the plasticky feel of xt body.

don't worry so much about these two bodies... either way, you'll end up with a solid camera. rather compare the lens line up... and how much you'll be able to afford.

Are you talking about the original Rebel or the XT? When you bought the D70 the XT wasnt out right? The build quality has improved greatly since the original one.

I think the XT came out about two months after i got my D70. Yes, the XT feels like a better build but a new issue cropped up for me on that one, WAY too small for my hands, it wasn't comfortable for me to hold.

I know some people didnt like the small size.

The only reason I posted in this thread is because the user asked for a comparison between D70S and XT and you were talking about the original rebel, which coud've confused him (on some points... cause I know the kit lens on the D70 is stil better). ;)

If you're just starting out in the SLR world, there's not much of a reason to prefer the Nikon over the Canon - they are both good cameras.

Most of the time though, people considering a DSLR already have a film SLR. Which means they have lenses. Biggest selling point for Nikon is that they've used the same mount on all their SLR cameras for at least 30 years. No joke, I can take the 50mm lens that was purchased new with my mom's Nikon FE in 1978, and attach it to my D70 and snap away. Sure, I lose out on a good portion of the advanced metering, which didn't exist at the time, but the lens is as function on the D70 as it is on the FE.

Which is what it comes down to, for me. I'm not as scared to spend big money on exceptional lenses, because I know I can use the on newer cameras. Just remember, a camera is only as good as the glass it shoots out of.

I can vouch for the fact that build quality has improved.

My high school's yearbook photographers use DReb (non-XT) and I recently tried out the XT to get a feel for it and it has improved VERY MUCH.

Well, I've been saving my $$ for a while and I decided last month to get a DRebXT. Still a few more $$ to go.

The D100 has better shadow detail recovery than the D70s plus it has optional vertical grip. If neither is important to you or if you don't think they're worth the money then go with the D70s.

As far as ergonomics go, I prefer the D70 over the XT. Having only 1 dial sucks. It's like not having right-click. Plus I like the D70 kit lens over the XT one. Both cameras take perfectly fine pictures though. My advice would be go out to a Ritz or whatever and try em out, figure out what you're comfortable with.

If you need D70 samples, see sig :)

That's all you did?

You gotta mix it up! Dishes, wash the car, fix your dad's business computer (thus saving a huge sale) :p

Suckers, it took me umm a month to have enough money for these cameras. Hey, I have other things to pay for! ;)

Oh yeah, I have no ambition to buy one any time soon.
