The user reviews have me a bit wary. Many say it has quality issues like freezing and that the lens stop zooming.

Are there any other cameras worth looking at below $150 new or refurb (was thinking a Panasonic Lumix)?

The Nikon S9100 is last year's model, replaced by the S9300. I doubt if you can find this year's travel zooms for $150. or less. Look for last year's models, refurb or used (eBay). Here's a review of some of last year's travel zooms: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q311travelzoomgrouptest

I could also get the S9300 refurbed from B&H for $120 but the users review mention the exact same reliability issues as the S9100. :$
