Am looking at the Nikon Coolpix P80 as a supplemental camera for trips where lugging the 5D w/lenses and accessories is not convenient due to space and weight limitations. These are the general specs:

Coolpix P80 Digital Camera
? 10.1 Megapixel ? 18x Wide-Angle Zoom (27mm) ? 2.7" High-Resolution LCD ? VR Image Stabilization ? High Sensitivity (ISO 6400) ? D-Lighting ? Face Priority AF ? Red-Eye Fix ? Manual Exposure ? Up to 13fps Continuous

In the past I have used a Canon S3-IS for this purpose, but the P80 seems to be a significant upgrade in capability.

Comments?

I checked the Oly SP-560 UZ and the Fuji S8000fd at DPReview. All very similar. Oly and Fuji use 4 AA batteries. Nikon has rechargeable lithium. Users pretty much panned the Fuji. All the Nikon users seemed pleased. Fuji is the cheapest by about $50.

Thanks for the comments. Will ponder the issue. :)

Did you end up getting the Nikon? I'm currently trying to decide between this Nikon and the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. I have seen a lot of reviews on the Canon, but not much on the Nikon.

See above. Above I did get the P80, and can compare it directly to the S3 IS. The S3 is a bit heavier - mainly due to the batteries. It uses a pair of standard AA's. The P80 uses a single, lightweight Li-ion battery. Both use SD media. The S3 has a fully articulated LCD, and single, all-mode menu. The P80 has a larger rear LCD display, and menus are simplified - a separate one for each mode.

Will do some more comparisions later today...

Thanks for the info. Can you also tell me how they compare with shutter speed, low light shooting and image quality at the lowest ISO?

The S3 is limited to ISO 800. P80 can go to 1600 on Auto. Lowest ISO for either is 100.

Both have top shutter speed of 1/2000th. Both have a max f/stop of f/8.

P80 has "special" ISO settings for 3200 and 6400.
