Hey guys, I just received a Nikon Coolpix P100 as a present from Xmas last week and was wondering if anyone's had any experience or knowledge about it. I don't usually frequent this forum but I'd appreciate anything.

One thing that I've noticed is that the lens is not detachable. Does this mean that it's basically a consumer version of a DSLR?

Thanks! and I look forward to joining this forum :)

it's a superzoom, not any kind of SLR. what makes an SLR is the mirror that bounces light up into the viewfinder, that's the R(eflex) in SLR.

enjoy :)

I had a predecessor - the P90. As El Fenix says, it is a megazoom P&S. It is a versatile performer that can be a lot of fun.

Okay, so it's a megazoom point and shoot. In your opinion, would these types of cameras be the best way to go for an amateur in photography that hasn't taken special classes?

Thanks.

That would be a valid course of action for many people. That camera has all of the mode options and choices that are also on DLSRs.

That camera will mimic a DSLR is many ways and it will allow you to learn about cameras, so yes it is a great choice.
