Nikon announcement on August 24 - CONFIRMED!

Nikon has scheduled several press events in different countries on August 24th, 2011. This is now 100% confirmed from several different sources. Nikon did not have any scheduled press event for the last 50 f/1.8 and 40mm f/2.8 lenses, which makes the next announcement more important than the previous two. The new Coolpix cameras may be announced a week earlier (probably on August 17th) because Nikon likes to separate the introduction of pro and consumer products.

Could Nikon be announcing mirrorless? Probably not, would just like to see more manufacturers pick it up.

Interestingly, that's the only thing that has really leaked out. Nikon is working on a mirrorless.

I am hoping for the D700 replacement, so I can pick up a cheap D700 while you can still get them new/refurb.

D4 and D9000 (smaller / more consumer focused D3s aka d700 update). D400 and mirrorless in October.

From what I'm told the D9000 was delayed due to the earthquake, along with the sony sensor that more or less is the base of the D400. So it was originally supposed to be D9000 in spring, D4/D400 in August, mirrorless in October / in time for the holidays.

Nikon releases follow a predictable pattern. We got the D3 and D300 in one year, the D700 the next year.

They should be launching a D4 and D400 this year. The D800 should be coming next year.

i'm going with D4, D400 (i wanna know what sensor they're gonna use).

Thom had a good writeup on what he thought Nikon is doing with a mirrorless and why he think it's around 2.7 crop, which is smaller than m4/3. Everyone on NR was complaining that they wanted a DX sensor in mirrorless but that's not gonna happen.

is the D4 gonna be a direct replacement to the D3S because that seems pretty like a pretty short life cycle for a flagship model

I'm betting on the D4. The D3X is out of stock everywhere, and a D700 upgrade would destroy the sales of the D3/D300 line. I would already rather buy a D700 than a D3x (or a D300s).
