Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8: Critical design flaw.

This state-of-the-art lens seems to suffer from a very simple design flaw: light leaks from the distance scale window.
You may not notice the problem depending on your shooting style. However, if you do slow shutter or night scenery, it will get you.

If you plan to buy Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens anytime soon. I suggest you wait until Nikon come up with a fix. If you already have the lens, I think you'd better contact the service center or just tape that window.

I've never noticed anything on mine, but I checked around. I found this discussed on several forums including fredmiranda and nikonrumors. Based on members' testing, it appears to be hit or miss depending on the lens. It is rarely a problem on DX bodies, perhaps 50/50 on FX.

When a lens has the flaw, it is most apparent on many-second exposures at around 55 mm with a bright light shining directly on the window. This would be rare in real-world shooting though it could crop up with heavy ND filtering or maybe a night scene taken from a very well lit vantage point. The easiest way to test one's own lens is a long exposure with the lens cap on and sunlight or a flashlight shining on the window.

General recommendation -- if you're not content with just putting black tape over the window -- is sending the lens to Nikon for repair if it has this flaw. I didn't see any before and after testing by anyone trying this, however.
