Niki Taylor's crash: driver was reaching for CELL PHONE!

Okay, I need to rant about this as it is emblematic of Atlanta's drivers as a whole. This was a one-car accident totally due to the driver trying to locate his cell phone, losing control and hitting a pole. I can't count the number of times I've been nearly killed by some moron yapping on a cell while I'm out on my bicycle. What the hell is it going to take before we have a sensible law stating "no cell phone use in a moving vehicle"? I know it's kinda inconvenient to have to pull over to use the cell, but at least you won't kill anyone.:|

In the Tampa bay area...

just last week, a 27 year old was killed when he was changing his tire and struck by a 30-something driver, reaching for his cell phone...

When will people learn? Never.

Well hopefully since it was a famous person that was hit something will be done while the publicity is still focused on it.

The GA legislature was debating a bill to do just that. But, with the session over, I guess it just died. :disgust:

Conneticut just passed a bill stating it's illegal to talk on the phone while driving. Though they aren't going to pull anyone over for it, they are going to apply the law in court. Will be interesting to see if other states follow

Heh, I completely understand that people are morons. However, I use my cell phone in my car all the time. It all has to do with being smart and knowing what the hell you're doing behind the wheel. If someone goes flying off the road because they were reaching for a cell phone, then they shouldn't be driving in the first place!!!

The one law that should be passed ASAP before it gets out of hand is all these f**cking minivans with overhead T.V.s. Has anyone been behing one of these on a dark road? It's like a strobe light at a NYC club!

Everyone that uses a cell phone thinks they can handle it..until something goes wrong.

I just noticed, Nikki Taylor's parents are...

Barbie and Ken!!!!!!!!,...look at the CNN article that mentions them.

we've had this law in australia for a long time. problem is, how often do you think the cops will actually notice someone doing this and pull them over?

Schmuck, it works both ways.

I for one would like to have the ability to use a cell phone in the car (if I owned one?), but the truth is that most people that do don't know their blinker from their stick shift and just can't handle driving and chewing gum at the same time, hell, most people don't know how to drive and not do anything else at the same time.

CichliSuite,

My rights of driving safely are compromised by these idiots.

Yes I know people drive like idiots without talking on their cell, but it certainly does not help.

Nucleus111,

Unfortunately, there are too many stupid people who don't know what they're doing behind the wheel, and it's because of those people that a law needs to be passed banning cells while driving.

I know there are plenty of people that can talk on the cell and drive just fine, but there are too many people that can't. I can't drive to work in the morning and not see at least 2 or 3 people swerving a little in the road because they're on the cell and not paying attention. If what you're talking about is so important that you absolutely MUST talk and drive, then you can afford to pull over for a minute and pay all your attention to the phone.

I'm glad that it's illegal over here (netherlands) and that the police are pulling people over for it. (another way for the state to make money)

I own a mobile but it's ALWAYS off when i'm driving...

When endangering other people's lives because of carelessness is not something we should be worried about then I am moving into the hills to become a hermit :)

I talk on the phone when i am driving but I use a headset to do it so I don't have to worry about taking my hands off the wheel.

I always send people in the direction of the Sanyo 4500, its got voice dialing and a very loud speaker phone in a small package, never have to take eyes off road or fumble for it because its in a cradle and you can push any button to answer and has one very large button for Talk.

I think most states are leaning towards the requirement of hands free kits. Which is a good middle ground.

I knew I'd get a few comments stating that "I'm perfectly safe using a cell in my car while driving". You probably are, but it just takes one distracted soccer mom in an Expedition to turn me into a hood ornament.

As for whether the cops would enforce it, I think that such a law would at least make people think twice before digging for the Nokia. I am constantly amazed at the number of drivers I see on a daily basis with a phone plugged in their ear. Atlanta's traffic has become so horrible in the last few years (both in terms of volume and aggressive/idiot drivers) that it's really starting to cut into the quality of life down here. Something has to be done, and a "no cell phone use in moving vehicle" law would be a start.

Here's one for ya...

Around here you can't go more than 3 days without seeing a police officer appearing on television or in a newspaper article and complaining about people driving and talking on their cell phones. Well....who do you think are the worst offenders? Yep...the police. One of the cellular companies around here supplies the poilce force with free cell phone usage so those men and women are ALWAYS on the phone. I can't remember the last time I saw one that didn't have a cell phone to their ear. To make my point even clearer....I was coming out of the grocery store about 3 weeks ago, pushing my cart, headed to the car when suddenly WHAM!!! A cop had cut through between two parked cars, was talking on the phone, and he clipped the front of my cart. Did he stop? No....just kept on crusing and talking. He drove away too fast for me to get either his tag or car # but I was pissed. Freaking hypocrites!!!!

shinerburke, that doesn't suprise me.

on TV programs i have seen hidden cameras catching a cop talking on a cell, without wearing a seatbelt and pulling out into traffic without indicating all in one not-so-swift move. there should be ways of having these types of corrupted cops fired.

I think people should be able to use cell-phones while they drive as long as they use handsfree with it.That way you can still drive with two hands on the wheel.

CichliSuite--Two things:
1. Conservative fiscal policy has nothing to do with militias. MOST militia groups are focused on constitutional law, in light of the fact that so many of our laws stand in direct oppisition to the constituion. Granted, the radical groups serve to cast a evil cloud over all all militia groups. Educate yourself on this topic.

2. We are the land of the free, and of certain rights. Like the right to not be hit by an idiot in there motor vehicle talking on ther cell phone.

Your post was pure nonsensicle rhetoric, reflective of your overall lack of insite to the topic and about political nature.
