Among them are claims that workers at a Nike contract factory in Hansae, Vietnam, suffered wage theft and verbal abuse, and labored for hours in temperatures well over the legal limit of 90 degrees, to the point that they would collapse at their sewing machines. Nike is also accused of cutting jobs at the Hansae factory and pulling production from a factory in Honduras with a strong union presence, resulting in hundreds of workers losing vital jobs. The company has also allegedly denied the independent monitoring group Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) access to inspect its contract factories. The WRC was founded in 2000 by universities, international labor rights experts, and student groups, including USAS, to ensure that products bearing university logos were made under conditions that respected workers’ rights. (The organization says it had no part in the USAS protests.)

The WRC issue could become a serious one for Nike. The sneaker giant owns a major part of what the WRC estimates is a $4 billion retail market for university-logo products, the largest share of which is apparel. Georgetown, Northeastern, and Rutgers—all among the WRC’s 190 university affiliates—have already cut ties with Nike or said they will allow their contracts to expire due to the company’s stance on factory inspections. The University of Washington, meanwhile, has temporarily extended its expiring contract with Nike as it awaits the outcome of Nike’s mediation with Georgetown. (Update: Nike and Georgetown announced an agreement on Aug. 30 that gives the WRC formal access to Nike supplier factories making products for WRC affiliates.)

Being happy that a corporate entity is being slightly more socially responsible isn't a bad thing.

What's hilarious is that right-wing authoritarians happily march into the voting booths multiple times per year to vote in politicians who are attempting to destroy the remaining few regulations that prevent corporations from getting to operate in a FreeMarket™ mode that 100% permits wage-slave labor practices to occur. I have a feeling that after a few bad court decisions we may see a Democrat President add 2 more Justices under the pretense that one seat was stolen and possibly the other seats(s) were appointed by a corrupt President.
I’ll also say all hell will break loose if RBG cannot fulfill her term until the end of Trumps Presidency. She really should have retired during Obama.

Exactly. His rise in activism correlated to the decline in his career, and only became a thing after a photographer caught him sulking on the bench during the national anthem.

I would prefer it if Nike chose to recognize or endorse one of the players who authentically took a knee. Or maybe feature both Alejandro Villanueva and Meghan Rapinoe in the 30 year campaign, as there are several dimensions to this.

Regardless, I still purchased a pair of Nike cleats over the weekend because they are a good product and I recognize that the social media politics of major brands is about one thing...making money.

It is scary. Republicans have had this strategy in place for a while. They have already picked the cases they will appeal up to the Supreme court. Affirmative Action, Roe v. Wade, immigrant rights, etc. etc. There is no difference between a 6-3 Conservative majority and a 5-4 conservative majority when the conservatives generally vote the same way.

There is a lot of alarmism over the Supreme Court. Democrats didn’t play the long game and it will cost them the judiciary. There was far too much arrogance over inevitability.

Having said that, I don’t see Trump pushing any hard right ideologues to the bench. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are both excellent choices, although I would prefer Trump replace RBG with Garland as a gesture of good will under that scenario. Not going to happen.

I think a lot of people see this from their v. white privileged vantage points. It's hard to step in someone else's shoes and try to understand what this issue is about.

That sounds like the alarmist talking points of the resistance. Conservatives had that majority already with Kennedy. Roberts and Kennedy often served as spoilers to prevent a dramatic shift to the right. Kavanaugh, as the heir to Kennedy’s seat, will do the same.
