So does this thing have a GPS in it? Or are they using some kind of triangulation to figure out where a person is?

That sucks. What kinds of nike shoes can use GPS? Are there chips in them?

It has nothing to do with GPS.

There's a plethora of things that have been on the market for years that can be adapted to do this.

that little button has gps. no need for triangulation. i bet it just uses nmea protocol to transmit to the receiver. then anyone with a little knowhow can tap into the signal to get the gps coordinates in realtime.

why would the button have GPS exactly? they said they had to scatter a few around... sounds like triangulation to me

yeah, if you watch the video, they have to set up receivers that just listen to the same signal that the little insert is sending to the ipod attachment. no gps. Just a localized tracking system...pretty cool if a neighborhood of moms set this up for their little kids though - I lived close enough to elementary school to walk there, so I guess if mom was paranoid and overprotective enough, she could track me all the way :p

So they probably just set up a bunch of sniffers that are on whatever frequency and channel to look for a certain ipod attachment id? Then they just figure out where it is by which sniffers catch it?

That doesn't sound that tough.

GPS uses the NAVSTAR GPS Satellite system.

This is just RFID technology.

The term GPS is incorrectly used just about everywhere these days.

Interesting, so if its RFID technology then its gotta have a range limit?
