I am looking to add a little more tone to my stomach, chest, and back.

I am not overweight at all, and I eat a very moderate and healthy diet of foods.

Will a good healthy round of Sit-Ups and Push-Ups before bed help me to acheive some more tonage in my desired areas ?

ANY exercise at all is not wasted time. Obviously more time exercising = more results (to a point) but every little bit helps.

Throw some pull-ups and dips in as well and you'll hit just about every muscle group in your upper body for free.

Yes, some exercise is much better than nothing. do what you can, when you can.

they will help, but i don't know about before bed. you're not supposed to exercise for 2 hours before bed to ensure your body goes to sleep

Good point. Maybe do them in the morning or some other time of day so you won't have trouble sleeping.

Fausto, what are these 'dips' that you speak of ?

I actually have found that my situp and pushup sessions leave me less jittery than usual. This has actually increased my ability to fall asleep at night.

maybe instead of staying up later to work out, go to bed. get up a little earlier in the morning and work out then.

I do push-ups and sit-up in the morning. I feel less sore this way.

Crunches are situps where you do not go up all the way. Less harmful to your lower back.
Situps and pushups are good ways to tone the front of your body (chest, abs, triceps)
but don't really help tone your back or biceps.
For these, consider the pull-ups and/or chin-ups.
In my opinion, do them when you can and when it feels good. I have always enjoyed a good morning workout, but lately I have only been able to workout after work.
Just some thoughts.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about. All you need are two bars or something to put your hands on, lower yourself until your upper arms are roughly parallel to the ground and raise back up. Hits your tris and a bunch of other stuff as indicated in that link. If you get to where your body weight isn't enough, get a weight belt and hang a weight on it.

hmmm, Im not really sure that I have the kind of equipment necessary to perform this at my house.
You can wing it with a couple chairs. Place them facing each other a few feet apart, put your heels on one and your hands on the other, suspending yourself between them. Lower yourself, raise back up, repeat. Won't hit the secondary groups as much as the vertical kind, but still effective.

Is there any reason to do the Push-Ups & Crunches ? Are they basically working out the same areas ?

I can quite safely say that 12 months from now your situps will have resulted in no significant change in stomach toning. You want that lose weight.

In regards to pushups you may get some chest/tricep/shoulder strength, but nothing out of this world. The repetitions are just too high to really pile on size. Get a gym membership :)

*snickers*

No, push-ups are mostly centered around upper-body enhancement. Crunches are like "better situps" - more ab-oriented.

It's all about the knuckle pushups on tile.

Push-ups are for pecs (chest) and crunches are for abs so no, they are not working the same areas...

One thing that you should be doing is streching your chest muscles as you don't have any back excersise to compensate, in the end you will get a forward rotation of the shoulders and it doesn't look good at all, with all that work on abs and pecs with no work on opposing muscle groups (lower and upper back) you have to stretch a lot... or you will end up looking like you're hunching all the time...

Skoorb, there is not really any weight to lose. I have a small layer of "flab" coating my stomach, back, sides (love handles) . I just want to take that flab and turn it into muscle.

You cannot turn flab into muscle... it is impossible...

Get rid of the fat first and you will see your abs... and skoorb is right, the gym is the best place for training...
