Nightmare installing new BFG 6800 GT OC

Hello Guys,

My cousin just got a new BFG 6800 GT OC AGP, he bought it last week on a trip to Miami at a Bestbuy store, he came back to Venezuela last sunday and he's been trying since then to get the thing to work but no luck.

My cousin's rig:

Mobo MSI KT6 DELTA SERIES (MS6590), VIA KT600 Chipset
AMD ATHLON XP3200+
512 MB PC3200 Mem (SPECTECH)
HD WD 80GB 7200RPM, he also has one SATA HD but can't remember which one.

He configured the BIOS settings acording to the BFG's manual recommendations, he has tried with two different PSUs:

- 1st PSU, 400W no-name(came with the case): the computer won't even boot after turning it on.

- 2nd PSU, he wen't to a local store and the best he could find was an AGILER 500W (18A on the 12V line). With this one the computer boots, but when tyring to detect the HDs it can't find any of the them and just hangs there.

He has tried with minimal peripherals (just one HD, no CD/DVD drives) but the result is the same. He's noticed that when the computer is trying to detects the disks the CDROM has no power (pushing the button won't open the tray), if he unplugs the CDrom's power cable and put it back in the the CDrom starts.

If he installs his old card back (MSI GFORCE4 Ti 4200 128MB) the computer boots fine and works with no trouble.

We haven't been able to try his new card on my rig yet (we are kinda busy on weekdays), maybe we'll be able to try it by sunday, but's not for sure.

Could the card be the problem?, or it might be mobo or PSU related?. Any help and/or advice will be welcome.

Thanks.

I'd blame the el cheapo PSUs first. A solid 350W unit like an Antec, Enermax, Fortron, or Sparkle would be more than enough and provide better power than no-name 500W units.

400 watt noname = 500 watt agiler = garbage. Spend 100$ on a quality psu now and your friend will be set for many years (I'm using a 451 watt enermax that's over 5 years old, no psu problems yet 🙂).

So you think it's PSU related ?. Uhm... it won't be easy to find a quality PSU here (like Antec or Enermax), so he might be in trouble on this one.

We'll give it a try on my rig, but I also have an Agiler 400W PSU. So far that PSU has served me well, it's been powering the rig on my sig with no trouble so far.

Anyway, anything beside PSU that he could check or try before we actually get to test the card on my rig ?

Cheers

Do you have a digital Volt meter? if you do, measure the 12V rail voltage while running prime95. See how much the voltage drops when prime gets going. That can tell you if your PSU has enough juice or not.

He does have a digital tester, how should he connect it to check the +12V rail. Is it the same to run Prime and check the voltages with speedfan ?

Any other comments from 6800 GT owners ?

He told me he had the AGP aperture configured at 256mb. But I think I recall that if you have 512MB of ram it should be configured at 128mb, is that right ?

I'm doing my best to convince him not to throw the litter f.... outside of the window, or at least to throw it at my window hehe

I have the exact (?) same problem with my BFG 6800 Ultra OC. There are no problems with the card not fitting or damaged components. CPU/RAM is not clocked and I've tried to increase/decrease AGP voltage. When I press the power button, there is a constant high pitch beep which doesn't stop until power is shut off. The monitor acts like it receives no signal and remain black. It couldn't possibly be the PSU, since I have a 520W Aspire PSU with 37 Amps max on +12V.

Suggestions?

Edit: As you can see in my signature, I usually run the CPU overclocked to 2.4GHz, but clocked it down for the occasion.. (after having found out it didn't work the first time)

Steffen,

That was the same problem he experienced with the first PSU, the monitor remained black after turning the computer on, like a no signal.

But he didn't get the extreme high pitched beeping sound? And if the problem was PSU-related, why shouldn't my 520W Aspire PSU work? It's not like it's "noname" or a cheap brand. And the max amps should be high enough, I guess. Hmpfh.. :/

Edit: btw, my older video card is also a GF 4 Ti 4200 128MB. AGP 4x. Coincidence? must be.

Edit 2: My computer does boot. I can see the normal procedure on the POST-code displays (which tells me about the computers status) and it seems to boot normally. Only problem is that nothing appears on the screen and this high shreeking sound is ...a tad annoying.

I bought a BFG 6800 Ultra OC a couple months ago and installled it after I installed a PC Power & Cooling 510 Deluxe PSU. I didn't have to fart around with the BIOS to install it and I didn't see in the instructions about fooling with the BIOS to install it. I had a sound coming from the card that was like a high pitched sound but that eventually went away. I have enough power dongles to plug in the card so that was no problems. I like the idea that I had enough dedicated power cables to use and the PC Power and Cooling PSU is quite adequate to power the card and all my peripherals.

BTW, I had a problem with one of the DVI plugs where my monitor display had a green tinge. I unplugged the monitor cable and plugged it in a couple times and that issue was resolved. I guess there was some corrosion on the contacts. All is well after two months of use (knock on wood).

Good luck.

I'm gonna try to update my BIOS. Haven't done that for half a year.. (and the BIOS version then might have been older than the 6800-card :|) So that's my best bet so far. It's a work in progress.

Hi Steffen..... no high pitched sound for him.

I'm going to suggest a bios update for his mobo also...maybe that will help.

Still working...
