Wow that was a nightmare, I came into town here in Ottawa this morning for a few days of work. Nothing major, just a short stint here. I got stopped on my way through customs, where the agents proceeded to have me turn on my laptop, and began doing searches for all the relevant media files, .mpg's, .jpgs what have you. Well he then turns to me and says, "how do I mute the sound?". Then while the rest of the line is working their way through, he starts playing each mpg, looking for kiddie porn. Of which I of course have none.... I mean for godsakes, here I am standing in the customs line, while the agent is playing all my episodes of bangbus... I stood there for like 30 minutes while he did this. holy sh!t was that humiliating! I'm honestly completely shaken up. That was unbelievable... I'm still physically shaking from the whole experience. I finally got through, picked up my rental car and spent 10 minutes there just calming down.

Are they allowed to do that? I'm on the other side of the world so I wouldn't know...

I can't believe they would do that where people that could be offended by it can see. I know it may be perfectly legal to do it there but out of consideration I'd hope they'd take it to an examination or interview room.

what if he had been a doctor and they were pictures of burn scars on patients or something, wouldn't there be a legal privacy issue there

I woulda thought the same thing.... but no... right there in front of everyone from the plane... including people like the nice older lady I talked to about her grandchildren during the flight.... it was ridiculous.

In the back of my mind I have to think it has something to do with my being an American... and a little anti-us resentment.

To the OP:

That really sucks how that went down. You should write a letter or call the airline and tell them how you fell. Maybe write some of your elected officials as well. Surely they too would feel the same way if they were treated that way in the airport.

In the end, don't feel too bad. You're not alone in watching porn. Hopefully the guy was just doing his job and wasn't doing it just to mess with you or something...

you could hide the files, they don't come up on a typical search you have to tell the computer to look in hidden folders

Did they ask for your permission to use the computer? Did they give you any kind of written guarantee of confidentiality?

I thought they could only turn it on to make sure it wasn't a bomb. I didn't think they had the right to search and view files on computers though

You're an idiot. Most people don't expect to have their laptops confiscated and files examined by the Canadian gestapo.
